Update: Rear Brakes - service indicator

2012 x3 28i, 25,000 km. Rear brake service indicator signaling to service rear brakes (pads perhaps)

Normal? Thinking this is early?

Thanks

Ok, just got my first service done. Re: rear brakes (system called for servicing) result: 9.5mm pad remaining. BMW answer - " as per puma measure #52904112-03 requires prog/code" (software issue, brakes fine.)
Front brakes - 11.5mm.

I also learned why rear pads wear faster!. BMW sets more braking power to rear wheels to reduce "nose dive" effect...! I.e. The front of vehicle dipping during braking...

Also had them check clatter/rattle from center beam on sunroof. Cause: plastic divider hitting glass. Solution: felt tape on divider. Seems to have fixed rattle.

Wind noise from driver side pillar. Cause: gap in middle of the drivers gutter strip. Solution: strip removed and adjusted. Fixed wind noise.

Hope this is of benefit to others.

Cheers!

Sounds about right. There are a few models that are having CBS errors that cause services to come up earlier than they are due. Have them check pad depth and reset the CBS data to the correct pad depth If not due.

I'm at 41,000km and just had my annual oil/filter/cabin filter etc changes. Brakes were part of the inspection also and the work order says I still have roughly 7mm left on front & rear pads (down from 12mm or 13mm, can't recall what he said they started at).

My rear pads ACTUALLY needed changing at 10000 miles!!! managed to negotiate them at the dealer eventually although they insisted this was normal wear!!!!

Extrapolating from my mileage and service display, I anticipate having to change rear pads on my X3 M-sport by about 34,000 - 35,000 km. Seems like this car does work the rears pretty hard. My old 323i (E90) is on pace to do about 95,000 km on its first set of brakes.

Going in for service in 2 weeks, hopefully just computer error. you would think front brakes go before the rear!

Don't forget we can't compare our brake wear rates in modern vehicles to older designs. Brakes are now used a lot more in normal driving, within DSC, features like traction control and cornering brake control.

If you have the Performance Control option, then expect rear brake wear to be very fast if you drive with a bit of pace.

Quote:
In modern automobiles, the wheels on an axle are connected by a differential – a special gear that adjusts for this difference in length. BMW Performance Control takes this individual control a step further by changing engine output and if necessary applying braking force: the outer wheels get greater drive power, the inner less, and all four can engage with maximum traction. The BMW X3 literally drives into the curve, for an even greater sense of dynamic driving and excelling stability.
Brakes can be being applied to selected wheels far more than a driver will be using the brake pedal.

My rear brake pads are due for replacement in another 3,000km, about 29,000km. Front pads have another 18,000km to go.

Very interesting... the software issue for your rear brakes sounds like a common occurance since it has a Puma case associated already. Will have to keep that in mind for my next service to make sure they don't change my rear pads unnecessarily early.

Very true, I can see folks getting stung with early pad replacement if service depth. doesnt pipe up...

Done 16300km and service indicator says to replace rear brake pads in 43000km. So in total that is almost 60000km.
Mostly short trips combined city, mountain and highway.

I'm experiencing the same thing. It's been showing 1400 mi till service for the rear brakes for over 2000 mi so far. I'm at 22,500 mi at this point.

Mine is a 2012 2.0d with 24000km.

Was in for my first service today, oil change. Yesterday my rear pads indicated 8000 km left.

During today's service they measured the pads and then reset the indicator to 28000 km!

Apparently the software is not calibrated correctly?
