water pump dies at 50k miles

I was told by the dealer that my water pump needs to be replaced, but the car is drivable etc.. I got a message ok my nav that engine is overheated or something along those lines, pulled over, 5 min later started the car and everything is fine, the temperature never went above 250, is that a sign I need a new water pump?

I would get a Independent BMW Mechanic as a second opinion, but if you keep driving while the temp gauge is high, you risk your engine blowing up and the cylinder heads will warp. Then the engine will be beyond repair, you will need to replace engine. New water pump replacement is much cheaper than new engine replacement.

You have a 2015 X3 and you're at 50k miles. I thought I drove a lot! 18 months and 52k miles.

...I'm taking it as you didn't purchase an Extended Warranty?

No the X3 is 2012. I am having the Dealer replace the water pump and battery as they negotiated the price down to the same level as some quotes i got from local mechanics. I am considering buying the extended warranty as i will be keeping the car for another 3-5 years. Any suggestions on what i need to look out for?

But technically your factory warranty is void correct? Since your already at 50k miles. You were to purchase the extended warranty before 50k mile mark. 4 years or 50k miles. I bought my BMW Platinum Extended on my 2012 with 48k miles (last OCT 2015), but technically the factory warranty is until this March 2016, but I hit 50k miles early January of this year, but no issues thus far, *knock on wood*.

correct, my factory warranty expired at 50k miles. Was the platinum extended warranty expensive? I am going to talk to the finance guy today but would like a ballpark so i don't get screwed. how many years/miles is the extended warranty for?

it depends on which one you want, but they all are insanely expensive, i would look into route 66 warranty, they are good from what i read/heard and cheap. I got a quote for 4 years/48k miles for $2300, no deductible and covers everything except wear and tear items.. BMW will cost double
that if not more..
