Remote wire/12v wire to tap into for subwoofer install
Hey all-
I've got a '12 F25 with premium sound, and am looking to install a trunk subwoofer. I have been talking with Technic about using one of his harnesses with an LC2i line out converter with auto-turn on technology when a signal is present. Apparently the premium sound amp in the F25 does not provide enough DC power to properly use the auto turn on feature of any line out converters, so to add any aftermarket speakers (in combination with the Technic harness), you will need a 12v remote turn on wire. Anyone know where one is at I could tap into? Hopefully close to the amp in the back. I'd like to get a sticky going for F25 audio. It seems that nobody knows anything about the F25, including musicarNW. BSW is working on a stage 1 kit, but it's not complete yet. |

I've read that other model Bimmer owners are tapping into the 12dvc power for the antenna. Don't know if it will work on the F25. Can you use a relay?
Hopefully BSW will come out with something soon. |

Sorry, haven't looked for it. If I remember correctly, on the other models it seems to be in the column by the right rear seat. It's hard to believe that the X3 doesn't have the amps(?) to trip the standby. I think if you could find the right relay you could use the present switched wire to trip the relay and use a more "powerful" though the relay to trip the auto on.

Here's the quote from Technic:
None of your OEM amp outputs will trigger any signal-sensing remote LOCs (passive or active). The DC content of this particular BMW OEM amp outputs is way below the minimum required for the trigger. Looks like we have been talking apples and oranges somewhat. First, when I use the word "amps(?)", it meant amperes, not amplifiers. I assumed when you used the phrase "premium sound amp in the F25 does not provide enough DC power to properly use the auto turn " that you were looking for a "switched" 12dvc wire, not a speaker level signal. Speaker output is a AC with a DC bias current, NOT a DC current (try hooking a battery up to a speaker and see what happens). Therefore if your speaker level output or a switched 12dcv signal cannot power on the LC2i you probably should move on to either Technic's LOC or an amplifier that has speaker level inputs. I don't know the spec's of the LC2i, but if you wire it as described above, won't you be tapping off the harness from only one woofer output wire and not the other channel. If so, you maybe missing out on music information from one channel. So forget the relay suggestion and if you need to find a switched power source pull out a multi meter and start looking for antenna wire, cig. lighter or perhaps behind the fuse box.

The LC2i has two channels of speaker level inputs. So my plan is to tap off one of the high level speaker signals off of Technic's harness and hook that into channel one on the LC2i. This..should...activate the auto turn on feature of the LC2i. Then on channel two, I was going to remove the Navone LOC, and wire one channel of the subwoofer signal into channel 2 of the LC2i. This should give me the following: 1. Use channel 1 to auto turn on the unit 2. bass output to an amplifier through channel 2 Technic is saying that there wouldn't be enough power coming out of the amplifier to activate the turn on feature through channel 1, let alone channel 2. |

Looking at the picture on Crutchfield's website I see that there is a INPUT for 12+ remote wire and an OUTPUT 12+ remote wire. Your amplifier is also going to need a remote turn on. I would take Technic's word and not try to use audio signal sensing. It maybe a little more effort, but finding a switched hot wire will be more reliable than depending on audio sensing. The BMW amplifier and Technic's harness both have two output wires for the stock woofers. Again wiring it the way you propose may cut out some bass information from one channel, depending on where the BMW crossover is set. My bet is that it is over 100Hz because of the size of the door midrange. IMHO running a 12+ remote wire and allowing your sub amplifier to sum the bass output to your sub would give you the best sound and reliability.

Alright, I'll try to find a 12v switched wire (as this thread was titled originally lol)
I'm trying to be as descriptive and ask as many questions as possible so we can sticky this. I've checked out the 12v power port in the trunk, no go. Always on. I've been reading that technic has suggested that pin 13 on the OEM head unit provides turn on to the antenna amplifier on the roof on the left side of the vehicle. There's a diagram of the F25 audio harness. Any idea where this shoots up to the antenna? I'm assuming I could open up the OEM harness indicated at "1" and look for the thin black wire, but I think it splits off somewhere that might be easier. |

I also tried the power jack this am and a small gauge red/black stripe wire next to the fiber optic. Always hot. I've read that there is an antenna wire in the same area, but some descriptions have it as white.
Addition-If you look at a larger view of the wiring, it looks as if a large bundle of wires go up the right rear post. Probably controls tailgate and other electrical. Last edited by Radioactive; 08-26-2012 at 12:35 PM.. |

I found a high gauge black wire in the main bundle going to the roof through the right rear column that is switched. Pull out the right panel used to access fuel door pull and rear light. No power, then turned on radio, measured 12dcv, powered off, waited 15 minutes and nothing! Of course verify..not responsible for your car. Last edited by Radioactive; 08-26-2012 at 01:37 PM.. |

Ok, so removed right rear panel and took some photos, again in the interest of making a sticky:
I see the right bundle going up the rear pillar, but didn't find a high gauge wire in any of them. Can you circle on the photos where you found it on yours? These are (1 of overall, then from left to right, right being rear of vehicle) |

That's it. I tested that wire, 14V car on, 12V after turning car off and head unit/sound still active. 0V once the vehicle is locked and head unit is off.
Must be the power antenna wire. Admins, can we sticky this thread? This is essential for anyone looking to add a trunk subwoofer with Technic's harness (or any method) in the '11+ F25 X3. |

Hey, I am using a BSW LOC they provide with my E90 sub kit and I used the rear left and rear right speaker wires for the signals input for the LOC. Is this bad, I see some people using the left and right under seat sub wires for the signal inputs.
My sub is working fine but I am wondering if I am loosing performance due to the current wiring. Any suggestions?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Technic answered this for me. Please read my post below!!

For anybody who maybe interested in knowing, when you hook up an amp using a loc to the f25 with premium audio, you must use the under seat sub wiring to hook up the LOC.
The "EXTRA THICK" wires are easily located at the amp in the rear driver quarter panel. Blue with red stripe (LEFT +) Blue with brown stripe (LEFT -) Black with red stripe (RIGHT +) Black with brown stripe (RIGHT -)

The pictures are a little blurry - just so it's 100% clear for anybody trying this, the radio antenna wire is the small thin black wire in this bundle. It isn't one of the grey wires.
