MB will probably begin offering their small 2.2 diesel on the updated GLK (the 3.0 is already available on the ML320Bluetec) soon. It's logical BMW will step their game up (hopefully ). Not sure about the larger 3.0 tt diesel mill; it seems like they would federalized the popular i4 N47 diesel instead if the business case could be made.

Is be surprised if they brought the 20d. It's underpowered for the US
market. They can get away with the 4 pot N20 as it's performance figures are in line with the old 28i six. It might be a four but it feels like a six. The same cannot be said of the 20d. It's a great engine but it would underwhelm the average US BMW driver especially in a car like the X3.

The 30/35d still have excellent economy figures to impress and the performance to match.

According to SCOTT, plans do indeed include a 6 cylinder diesel X3 option for the US. Of course, there's no guarantee that it will be the 35d since, as you probably noticed, there is a 30d available overseas too. And in fact the engine used for that model is actually a close match in output to the current US 35d engine used in the X5 (and outgoing 3 series).

No timeframe has been disclosed for this yet to my knowledge, but there are similar rumors of the US getting an X1 diesel (a four cylinder in that case) at its launch later this year or soon after. So, it may be that the X3 will get the diesel option at that time as well. Or maybe we'll even get it sooner, at the start of MY2013 production - who knows.

Agree.

Although, you may be unaware that BMW actually has two higher output four cylinder diesel options at their disposal - a ~204hp "23d" (currently in X1 and E8x 1 series) and an about-to-be-announced ~215hp "25d", coming to the F2x 1 series. In theory, one of these might provide acceptable motivation for an X3 in the US. However, as I said above, the X3 is reported to be getting an I6, so its probably a moot point. Nevertheless, one of these two four cylinder options is rumored for the US X1 (and Mini Countryman); hopefully it ends up being the latter.

Yes I know those two (23d is a great engine- was BMWs first twin turbo diesel I believe- and 25d that will shortly replace it looks even better) but they are not currently utilised in the X3 in any market so unlikely to be the oil burner under the bonnet in the US.

Do you know if you can somehow get to the buildt-in SIM card? And maybe replace it with something better?

In Norway we don't get the BMW Assist with data traffic at all. But I guess the SIM slot must be somewhere and if I could just insert my own SIM for data traffic....

Is the 30D and 35D are same engines for different markets or they are totally different engines?

Different engines. Similar displacements but 35d adds second smaller turbocharger and other improvements.

True, and I agree.

Oh, and I should add that I was incorrect about the ~215hp version of the I4 diesel debuting soon. The fact is that it is already being used in the 525d (perhaps not all versions of the 525d in all markets though - I am not sure).

What dnw said. Additionally, wikipedia has a pretty good entry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N57

(Though I won't vouch for the completeness nor correctness of the model list.)

Is 8TH (speed limit info) something that could be retrofitted. I would be interested in adding it.
Or is it not an option that will be available in the United States?

From April 2012 on (MY2013 switchover month for US), the X3 28i will get the new 2.0L 240hp N20 inline 4 engine, replacing the naturally aspirated inline 6 found in in the X3 28i through March 2012 production.
I was thinking of placing the order for 2012 X3 28i in a week or 2. The delivery date would be some time after March 15 I believe. Now seeing this I am wondering if I should wait for a month and place the order with delivery date in April.

I am not interested in the new options, is there a link somewhere that explains the advantages of N20 over current engine? It's 2.0, so a bit better mileage like Q5? Anything else?

Thanks.

"Speed Limit Info inkl. Überholverbotsanzeige" means "Speed Limit Info including overtaking display"

What is overtaking display?
"Speed Limit Info inkl. Überholverbotsanzeige"
It's just a camera in the mirror reading not only speed limit signs, but also overtaking ban signs. Basically it could be able to read any sign, if the software was appropriate.
The signs are showing up as symbols in the instrument panel, or in the HUD.

In Europe it states 245bhp and
8,9 / 6,7 / 7,5 per 100km for city/highway/mixed

This translates to:
26,4 / 35,1 / 31,4 MPG for city/highway/mixed

It has the Auto Start/Stop feature.

Those numbers won't be close to US numbers for city and hwy. I would guess 21 city and 28-29 hwy, can't imagine much more than a 10% improvement since we already had the 8 speed transmission. Kind of hard to compare it to anything BMW currently makes except maybe a 528X for all wheel drive but 528X would be lighter and definitely much more aero dynamic. I think the 528X is 23 city and 32 hwy.

These figures was taken from the new X3 pricelist (April 1st) with the 8 speed auto....

They don't rate European mpg like the EPA does in the US so we are both right. The current X28 is 19 city 25 Hwy in the US.
