Auto shutoff

I am considering having the dealership undo my 2013 X3's automatic engine shutoff at idling. I don't think it is helping my gas mileage, can't imagine its not hurting the life of my starter, and find it unnerving, especially at night (lights flicker) and when its raining (wipers hiccup).

Any thoughts?

I don't like it either and feel the same. I have a switch next to the start button on our 2014 so we do not need to reprogram the fob. Sounds like prior years didn't have this?

The cut off button works. If you don't like the engine shutting off, just disable the feature. Also, the starter was seriously beefed up to handle this added load. I personally like sitting at a red light and the car not running. Every little bit helps.

Not so. The eco pro mode that was introduced in 2013 along with the new 4 cylinder motor on the 28i's came with the auto start/ stop feature along with the kill switch next to it. It is fully defeatable for those that don't like it.

You cannot have the auto start stop shut off, but the dealer can reprogram your start stop button to remember the last state, meaning that if you push the button to shut it off, it will stay off the next time you turn on the car. You can still turn it on by pushing button. I am having my X3 reprogram next week by the dealer. I believe all the 14 X3 have this new progarmming already.

Yes, it appears that the auto start/stop button remembers what the prior setting was on startup.

Correct as I was told. I don't mind the shutoff except for 2 annoyances. One, it cuts off immediately so it activates at gates, etc for 1 sec, and two, if it kicks back on while still stopped, it's very abrupt, as compared to the restart when releasing the brake.

The re-start is a bit rough on the 4 cylinder, on the 6 cyl., its not as bad.

I don't mind it on my 14 35i, it is set by default to remember the last setting, where before the 14 model year it was set to on by default and would turn back on when you turned off the car. The possible settins are on by default, off by default or remember last setting.

Do you have the deactivate switch? I make a habit of switching it off when I press the start button.

You can also prevent auto start/stop from engaging at a stoplight as follows, even if the system is activated: Press the brake hard when you come to a stop, then ease up on the brake pressure a little (but not enough to roll forward.) The engine will not stop at that light. Try it, it works!

That trick works for me 1 out of 10 times, too much work, its easier just to push the button

+1 I cannot get that to work no matter how hard I try, just shuts off anyway.

leave your climate control on auto and you never have to worry about the pressing the button to turn off the auto start/stop

I leave mine on auto all the time, still shuts off at lights, but sometimes turns back on before the light ends - maybe that will change when it gets hot in the summer here and the AC needs to run all the time?

Lights and wipers should not flicker during a start/ stop sequence. That only happens during main ignition (ie accessory on/off)

Not sure about the lights, but the wiper definitely stop for a moment when the engine starts up.

big +1. totally annoying and very abrupt if using auto hold and engine shuts off using Auto S/S.

It's called ASS for a reason

You can also have it disabled by:

Transmission in Sport Mode & Eco in Sport Mode

That's the way I like to drive this little N20 anyways so it's perfect for me!

I had my engine start/stop button programed to stay on. The owners manual says this stop/start feature can cause wear on certain parts.
