Hitch?

Anyone buy a DIY hitch installation? Don't need wiring, will just be for a bike rack. Any pics or tips appreciated.

I just installed the Curt hitch this past weekend. It wasn't too difficult. Pictures can be found at etrailer.com. They also have an install video, that was what I followed to install mine.

Have pics of it installed? Is it permanent or removable?

the etrailer site has lots of pics and details on the installation. it takes 2 hours to install and you need to trim some hidden paneling, so I'd say it is permanent.

I just got quoted $2600 from the dealer where I bought my X3, including $1700 for parts when the BMW site itself lists the parts for under $800. They also quoted 5 hours of labor.

Talk about an attempted gouging! Wow.

I'm looking for a hitch so I can install a bike rack, not tow a freaking house!

Curious of the name of the dealer.

It's here in NJ. Don't really want to bad mouth them because the entire sales process in buying my X3 over the past few months was outstanding. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt (for now) that this is a misunderstanding based on a bad parts lookup or something.

If not, I can always take my business elsewhere. And given this will be my first real service visit (since the first scheduled service is not for another 10-11 months) the dealer who does my hitch may get my long-term regular maintenance too.

I called them out in this quoting the parts prices on BMW's own website. I'll see what they come back with.

Mine was purchased and installed by BMW Roxburry where I purchased the car for $850 (they threw the install for free.) I made sure it was part of the deal.

Yes my dealer clearly is way off base here. Given the price difference I don't think they have a clue what they are talking about or even quoted me. My quote was $1800 for parts alone when on BMW's own site they come to under $800. I'm actually curious what is it they thought they were going to install on my X3 for that price. Must be pretty impressive hardware! Not to mention 5 hours of labor!!! Lol

It is a bit a work, have to drop the entire bumper, cut a piece of the underskirt, and also do a hardware flash to program the the car to recognize the hitch. I remember doing the same deal on my E83 X3 which took me 2 hours to do. This would probably take the same but 5 hours I doubt. Definitely worth having if you have the reverse camera with birds eye view. Very nice feature to see the hitch from top/down. Goodluck

Nope, was a different dealer a bit further north.

I'm holding off on this for now. I figure when it comes time for my first service a dealer may be willing to quote me a better price on this in order to get my service business going forward. I'm not hung up on getting service done where I bought the car, especially since there are two dealers closer to my home that where I purchased.

I paid just under $700 (part plus labor) at a local trailer shop to have a hitch installed for bike rake. They did a great job, it fits snug under the bumper. Near Poughkeepsie, NY
