X3 35i Towing Capacity?

I'm having trouble finding what the towing capacity of a X3 35i. I can't find it on BMW's site and the other sites I've seen range from 3000lbs to 6000lbs. I want to pull a spec miata (2200lbs) on an open trailer.

Depends on your hitch. Your hitch is most likely rated at 3500 pounds. You also have to factor in the entire weight of the entire car. The more important number is GCVWR which is combined capacity rating of both vehicles. What matters is GCVWR.

The x3 is 7,500 lbs.

Why this matters? You can safely tow this number minus your fully loaded vehicle weight.

For the x3...the car weighs 4900 pounds add a few hundred more for fuel and luggage, you can tow 2,500 pounds...safely

Hope that helps.

You can certainly tow 2500 safely but the above numbers are not accurate. X3 is nowhere near 5,000 lbs. Do a search on here, there are many threads about towing capacity and hitch options.

Unladen weight is 4230 lbs.

Add fuel, a few passengers and some luggage and you are over 4900 lbs.

Unladen / curb weight in the US includes fuel. BMW's figures may even include a driver since European standards are different.

Has anyone actually weighed their x3?

I'd also like to know the weight of the current F25 35i and the weight of a 2011 35i SAP

Unladen weight via EU standards has the 35D M-Sport at 1935 kg (4266 lbs). If that includes the driver and a tank of gas, that puts the weight at @ 4000 lbs.

I may have got the numbers a bit off but they aren't that much different. The 35i is around 4265 pounds which doesn't include anything just the car. So once you add fuel luggage and 4 passengers you are already over 5000 pounds. The US hitch is rated as class 3 but you are not able to tow as much because of how the hitch is mounted in the US. If you go to europe the hitch there is better designed and thus doesn't need as much leeway when it comes to towing so they put a class 2 hitch but both Euro and US cars technically can only tow 2400 pounds. You could of course go over 2400 pounds but then you there is less weight in the car ie only 2 people instead of 4 or no luggage but it would only change it by a couple hundred pounds.

Euro unladen weight does not include fuel

The factory installed electric hitch and X3 (F25) is allowed to tow 2400 kg (5291.09 pounds) in Finland, if the towed vehicle has brakes.

There is no upper limit what the combination can weight, at least if you have good enough drivers license.

If you have license for only passenger cars (B), the the total maximum weight of combination is 3500 kg (7716.17 pounds).

I have a BECE license and during summer I think my car + towed caravan was total 4200 kg (9259.4 pounds).

This is just to let you know what is the situation here and what the actual car is capable of, regardless of laws.
