Exclamation DTC question

I own a 2004 X3 with the 2.5 liter engine. I was wondering about the function of the DTC button.
1. When I press it one it turns on a little 4x4 light on the dash
2. if i hold it for about 10 seconds or more the light goes off

I was wondering what the difference between these 2 modes are.

Thanks,
Ian

Page 50 of your owners manual.

If you don't have one:

Yes I do still have all of the about 5 owners manuals that came with the car, but it still does not explain what it does once the light goes out after holding it for more than 10 seconds.

If light is on, DSC is disabled and DTC is enabled. If the light is off, DSC is operating normally.

For some reason I dont find that response completely satisfying because once the light goes off after holding it for 10+ seconds there is no way of turning it back on or off unless you turn off the car and then restart it. So I am almost 100% that holding it does do something, I am just not sure of what it does do.

Did you ever think that since you have to "reboot" the car to get it to function again that you might be screwing something up?

Where did you come up with the idea to hold the switch for 10+ seconds in the first place?

I read on this forum that in other cases this does do something, but when I asked if it applied to the 2004 X3 they where not sure. And I called my local BMW they wouldnt tell me what it did but they said it would not harm the vehicle.
