X4 M40i and brakes

Coming from a X4 30D I expected a bit more from the brakes. Considering the M40i now, I was wondering how the brakes match this car?

- Are they any better then on the 30D? Or are the brakes exactly the same?
- Did anybody upgrade after delivery?
- Any other thoughts? Or is what is delivered good enough to do the job?

I am not familiar with the 30D or its brakes, but...

I was told that the X4 M40i front brakes were "borrowed" from the (bigger) X5. It should be simple enough to compare parts numbers for the two of them, and but I never bothered.

I will say this that it took a few miles before the braking was consistent and confident. Maybe as much as 1,000 miles. Or maybe I just got comfortable/used to them at that point. I dunno.

The brakes are extremely dusty, more so than any other Bimmer I have had the pleasure to drive. But make no mistake, these brakes work very well on this heavy car.

DBU,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have a test drive planned soon, so I will be able to compare.

Have done the test drive last weekend and yes the brakes do the job! Good enough for me that is for sure....... The car is a dream, just finalizing the deal now, order and wait....

Just one more question: was hoping to have a sport brakes upgrade (so I have red calipers) but BMW is not offering that. Any suggestions here? Change them, paint them, ....

Curious to find out....

I looked into brake upgrades to full M package and it was a fortune. Determined that I did not need the performance upgrade as the M40i essentially has the x5 rotors and calipers and the car weighs 1,000 lbs less. Brakes are great, and, yes, very dusty. Somehow the dust seems to cling more and I have Optimim Gloss coat on all wheels, summer and winter.
Think I'll try the armourall wheel stuff on my summer package when I make the change.

As for painting, not for me, but if you do be sure to use high temp resistance paint.

Front wheels are a PITA to keep clean, brake dust is so bad!
Thats why I dipped my wheels to avoid seeing it dirty in the winter and now considering the upgrade to Forged wheels shave 10-14lbs a corner I'm carefully choosing the right rim to allow easier cleaning

The brakes are dusty, yes. This is because of the break pads composition. Because its an M series BMW, the brakes are made of the material used on M class BMW's. They are superior in stopping power over a pad composed of ceramic. Like all new brake pads, there is a break in period. I imagine they do use the same pad's on the X5 M series.
