Her at the Sea: Epic NY-LA-NY Roadtrip in X3

Hi all, I've been thoroughly enjoying reading all the posts on Bimmerpost and I've always felt bad not to contribute enough! My wife and I recently finished a NY-LA-NY roadtrip and I would love to share this with you. We visited many places and friends (I got my degrees from USC and now work NY) and whole trip was about 28 days including 2 weeks of staying in LA.

Our 2011 X3 behaved beautifully throughout the 8,000-mile trip, covering the the bitter cold east coast as well as the warm California without any problems. The size is just right for 2 people on a long trip. The ride is comfy and the design is young and stylish. Average mpg: 23 (we have the 2011 3.0 inline 6 - before X3 switched to turbo in 2012). The engine is butter smooth, really linear and classic sounding. It's the unsung hero of the trip. Enjoy the pics from the trip!

Day 1 NYC - St Louis, MO (950 miles, 16 hours driving time)
Day 2 Santa Fe, NM (1050 miles, 14 hours driving time)
Day 3 Meteor Crater in Winslow, AZ; Scottsdale, AZ (550 miles)
Day 4 Los Angeles (400 miles). Stayed for 2 weeks, including a trip to Vegas.

Day 18 San Diego (120 miles)
Day 20 Tucson, AZ (420 miles)a
Day 22 Houston / NASA Johnson Center (1050 miles)
Day 24 New Orleans (350 miles)
Day 26 Nashville, TN (550 miles)
Day 27 Philadelphia, PA (800 miles)
Day 28 NYC (100 miles)

Nice pics and nice trip!

For us non-US-people, could you add short description under each photo, please?

Great pictures but curious about two things.

The Heater/AC display is in Centigrade yet the outside temp is in Fahrenheit. Just found it interesting that they were not consistent.

I also found it interesting you intentionally blanked out your license plate. Thousands of other drivers see it when you drive so why hide it here?

I did enjoy the pictures.

I would also block out mine. With the plate number, in many states you can get all the owner's information like name, address, Phone number, etc. You never know who is in a group like this.

I was wondering the same thing. The exif data is missing in the photos or I wouldn't have to ask.

And that is a bigger concern than the thousands of strangers that see you and your plate as you drive your car?

Wife reads F, and I prefer C. I thought it's a common curtesey to blank the license plate because so many other people do it in their posts. Good eye! We will take another trip to Miami. I'll post some pics when that's over!

Great post. You've more than made up for any prior posting deficiency. I really enjoyed the pics. Kudos to the photographer. Makes me want to head out on a road trip right now!

FWIW, the (twin scroll) turbo 3.0 six (N55) was available in the 2011 model year (started production and delivery outside of the US in 2010). I know because we picked up one at the Spartanburg delivery center in March of 2011 and had a great drive home to Colorado.

For majority of them I used Sony NEX-C3, with mild touches in Lightroom afterwards. Coming from many DSLRs I think this little camera has an unbelievable ratio of value/size. For some LA photos I also used an old Nikon D40x with Sigma 50mm 1.4. My friends are often shocked those were taken by such "low end" DSLRs (compared to their huge full-frames). I just don't want to bring bulky cameras during a vacation and I basically trained my eyes to work those small cameras. If I need a super wide shot I'll then have to use the big guys.

Thank you for your support! Appreciate it

Thank you all for your kind reply. I regret not having enough pics on the car! we simply didn't think about making a post until I noticed how few roadtrip pics in X3 forum are when I got back.

I think X3 don't get mentioned often enough on Bimmerpost. I know it's not a performance car but isn't having a comfortable and stylish (and even understated) companion on the road as important and meaningful as having a hotrod? It'd be really sad if BMW only produces M3s and Z4s.

If you have some pics from your trips please post them. I'd love to see where you've taken your baby! Thanks again everyone.

Hey sorry man. I didn't figure out how to do that with 50+ photos. I now know that you can attach all of them and then insert each one. Anyway, the photos are in order of the trip timeline. I tried to put a "signature" photo of the city first when we moved, so when you see the scene changes dramatically that's a new city. I don't know if this helps at all....next time I'll get it right.

Yes I meant the switch to turbo 4. It's amazing N55 is more fuel efficient than the normal aspirated 6. Thanks haha.

Nice!! I'll be on a similar trip except my plans are to be chasing snow. Starting in Boston and going to UT, WY and then to Montana and British Columbia. Then down to Seattle and Lake Tahoe in California. Then back to Ut and home. I'm hoping to be gone 2 months. That's the plans now but you know what they say about plans. I'm taking 3 sets of ski's so I'll be prepared for anything.

Good for you, 2 months. For each set of skis, hopefully you match with cameras. Love to see some pic's. Anyhow safe fun trip with lots of powder.
