Sound System options in Canada

I have read the information on the sound systems again and I have found that in fact there are a number of combinations, depending on the model and options. This is what can be had:

On the 28i

Radio Professional (Standard)
Satellite Radio (optional)
Hi-Fi Sound System (optional, ZNG)
Combox controller (optional, ZNE although not directly related)

---

On the 35i
Radio Professional (Standard)
Hi-Fi Sound System (Standard)
Satellite Radio (optional, ZNJ)
HiFi Sound System Professional (optional, ZNJ)
Combox controller (optional, ZNE although not directly related)

What that seem to imply is that there is a "basic" version of the sound system in the 28i that cannot be had in the 35i. That sound system can be upgraded to Hi-Fi Sound System in the 28i, but in the 35i there is another notch up that is HiFi Sound System Professional.

In my tests, I have listened to all three sound systems (Basic, Hi-Fi, Professional), but I only noticed the difference between the Professional version and the other two, not between the other two. I am curious if anyone has.

Whew! These configurations look more and more like microprocessor machine language.

I've heard the basic and it is just that, very weak. I upgraded to the Hi-Fi and it's pretty good, very clear but far from a thumper.

I remember seeing in another thread that was talking about the audio system in the X3 in another country other than the US. I can't remember off the top of my head what the link was but it had the three options that you mention, basic, Hi-Fi, and premium which I know two out of the three is available in the US. Perhaps you can get the setup of the speakers or someone can shed some light on this.

US Audio Systems:

Standard Sound:
12 speakers
205 watt amp
3 channels

Premium Hi-Fi:
16 speakers
-7 mids
-7 highs
-2 subs
600 watt amp
9 channels
5.1 surround sound

The UK has three:

1. basic (not much good and don't have spec), comes as standard
2. business - as per 205W option above
3. professional - as per premium hi-fi above

I'm quite happy with the 205W business option. I did consider the more expensive option but I really don't need that much power and the quality on the 205W setup is pretty good. I had a 600W system in my GTI and rarely used it to its potential.

It seems the US excludes the lowest sound system (basic) in the US. The only experiences I've had were the business option and it was quite good. For the average driver who wants to listen to the radio and their ipod/MP3 its quite adequate but for others $850 (at least) is a good price especially if aftermarket items is not your thing.

Have no clue which brand these systems are but my impressions regarding some of these features in Canada are:

on 28i:
Standard Stereo Sound System
5 speakers
1 sub

on 28i:
HiFi Sound System (S0676) Optional - must have both Premium and Executive Package
12 speakers
2 subs

on 35i
HiFi Sound System (S0676) Standard
12 speakers
2 subs

on 35i:
HiFi Sound System Professional (S0677) Optional - must have both Premium and Executive Package
also called Premium Hi-Fi ???:
16 speakers
-7 mids
-7 highs
-2 subs
600 watt amp
9 channels
5.1 surround sound

This is excellent information, many thanks. I also read about DIRAC and LOGIC7. My understanding is that LOGIC7 is not on the X3. Is the Sound System Professional in fact the DIRAC system? It seems to me just by listening that there is some dynamic equalization to compensate for car noise, but I could not confirm this.

Might be country specific. Web page (bmwusa) lists mine as:
Logic7 sound system with Surround Sound and Digital Sound Processing.
