2011 X3 28i RunFlat winter tire options
is it okay to use 225/55 17 tires on an 2011 X3 28i? i saw a good price of this size Dunlop WinterSport 3D RFT. I know on bmw.ca the official winter package has a 225/60 17 pirelli tire + rim option for like 3k + so do i have to respect the 225/60 rule or is it okay to use other aspect ratio also?

There are probably no technical reasons why you can't use 225/55/17s in place of 225/60/17s. I'm currently running 235/60/17 (ie oversized) conventional tyres on my X3 without issues. But you may need to check what your local laws are regarding these tyres. For example - in some states here in Australia that would be illegal because the theoretical ODs of the tyres are greater than the +/-15mm variance allowed from the reference tyre (679mm for the 225/55/17 vs 702mm for the 225/60/17). The only other thing is because the ODs are different, your speedo will read about 3% higher on the smaller tyres.
