Idle issue?

Sometimes when I start up the car(35i) the idle seems to jump. It looks like the car is being revved up. IE the car starts.. Idles at ~600-800 and then jumps randomly to ~1700 RPM and then back down to ~1000 and then back up to ~1700RPM. It does this a couple of times and then settles down to ~600-800 RPM. Does anyone else have this issue?(if it is one?) This also doesn't happen all the time, just on the occasional start up

Yes, it's happened. Used to happen with the 330i, too.

I get this on both my bmw's. Can't say if it's 'normal', but I'm guessing it is b/c I get it on both vehicles.

Every time for a cold start. I spoke with BMW NA about this. They said it was normal. It still bothers me.

I can see it on a cold start. However, it happens in a garage and it hasn't been that cold in Chicago recently

Mine did it once when I was getting ready to back out of the garage in reverse. Glad nothing was directly behind me......

No I mean cold as in the oil temperature at startup over night.

Never had it happen to me but the X3's programing worries me in general. Normal mode & sport with only chassis selected maintains 1.2-1.5k rpm when driving a steady speed. This seems quite low and if driving at 2-3k rpm the engine starts to get quite noisy.

I have this problem too - on my 5th BMW and 3rd turbo engine variant. NOT NORMAL. The X35d doesn't do it, never has, and the Z4 35i does not do it - never has one time. The X3 has an issue and I expect it to be fixed.

Let me tell you something - I love BMWs, we all do or we would not be on this site. Let me tell you something else, BMW NA will screw you in a second to save a buck. I am sure this will be fixed with a software re-program of some type but it will take us hounding the dealers.

My 35i does it occasionally too. There is nothing consistent about it... I would say 1/5 to 1/10 starts it does it.

My 35i also does this once in a while when the car is cold. Does not happen frequently just a half a dozen times thus far. Have had my 35i since Febuary.

Just bought mine 3 weeks ago and it started doing this at 700 miles. I have had it back to the dealer 3 times and have gotten the cold start story. Sounds like I am wasting my time until they agree and get a software fix
