Dynamic Damper Control
To those of you who have the Dynamic Damp. Ctrl.(part of Dynamic Handling Pkg in US),do you feel it's really worth the price(1300-1400),or could you live without it??

Get it or you have no reason to live.
But seriously, it allows you to have three different cars; a soft-roader, a tall 335i, and an (almost) all terrain vehicle. |

I love it. In normal mode the ride is soft (for a BMW). In Sport mode, the car becomes an aggressive firm ride. In Sport+ you can have some fun drifting... But I have not really needed it yet. he combination of firmer steering, tighter suspensions and quicker throttle response is intoxicating.

I really enjoy it and use it daily. I could certainly get by without it, but if that meant the "Normal" mode all the time, I think I'd be disappointed with the car. I like that you can configure it. I have mine set so Sport changes only the suspension and steering (which they call "chassis"). If I want the transmission switched, too, I just move the gear shift left to add it.
There are three settings -- Normal, Sport, and Sport+. The suspension, steering, and transmission change only between the first two (as far as I can tell). With Sport+ DSC is disabled and DTC enabled.

I have consciously chosen not to get this option and not to get a HUD either. All other options were more important to me.
The DDC almost gives me a creepy feeling. Can you imagine a bipolar person that changes the moods and you are just controlling the timing for it? I prefer to know my car with one pure character and to explore it that way. I like to know what I'm adopting to and like to be treated straight forward. The car is wonderful as normal which is very rare these days. Just how I feel about the life itself. |

Thnx for your responses guys. The reason I asked is I'm about to order an X3 and money was a little tight. If I go with this option that would mean the baby would have to go without clothes/and food for a little while, but sometimes we have to sacrifice on some of life's nessities to achieve the goals we aspire to(X3 with DDC)!!

I went from a 135i to the X3 35i. For me it was a must. The regular ride is great, but when I want that tight fun feeling of a car... the sport button makes the car quick and tight.
The X3 is great without the option, but if you want that really sporty stiffer ride, go for it. If money is tight, you'll be ok without it. |

I've had 2 test drives so far, both without the option. I'll probably ring around some more to see if I can find a car with it. In normal mode the X3 is very comfortable but I don't find it sporty - it's more landroverish than I'd hoped. It also feels like a bigger vehicle than the Q5, less taut, and less feedback in the steering. While I could throw it around as is, some of my fears that BMW have removed the connection between vehicle and driver have been realized I think.
So my reasons for getting DDC are to return some of that feel and make the X3 the proper drivers vehicle. I'm not sure I'd be happy if it doesn't, maybe the x1 or the Q5 gets reconsidered. |

I just took delivery last week with the option. I really enjoy switching back and forth based on where and how I'm driving. I can't get into it yet with the break in period going on, but the suspension changes are real and noticable. When I'm in the city on bumpy roads I leave it in normal. When I'm on a smooth highway I prefer sport.
The kicker is you can set sport to either adjust 1) only suspension, 2) only when it shifts, or 3) both. For me, it was worth the money...but I'm admittedly a gadget and tech guy so I wouldn't have it any other way. |

I too would never have thought of this option, but I drove two different cars (one with the stock 18's and one with 19's) and the difference in the car with the DHP and without was quite substantial.
I am not a racer and don't drive THAT fast (well not yet at least - as I have not taken delivery quite yet of my X3 35i), but where I live there are some great twisties (somewhat ruined by the snowplows, etc...) and the DHP would make it that much more fun. Also, there was a chart a while back on this board about the DHP Normal setting being slightly softer than the stock suspension and that was important to me. Maybe not others but to me it was important. |

Worth the money for me, as well. Having had an M3 up until last Sept, I still like to "get into it" a bit, but also need the utility of the X3. It was a no-brainer to tick that option box in my case.

I opted not to go for the package, but I am still wondering if the DDC feature will be in the M Sport package. No one seems to know for sure, but the fact that they delete the sports suspension makes me wonder....
I have this feature in my X5 M Sport and use it. You can feel the difference - but it's subtle. Probably more noticable in the X3.

But actually, no. It has Normal, Sport (which has three settings: Chassis, Drivetrain, or Chassis & Drivetrain), and Sport+, which turns on Dynamic Traction Control and utilizes the car's sport oriented settings.
Dynamic Traction Control is optimal for both the track setting and the loose terrain setting, because the car is then capable of transferring up to 100% of the power to the rear wheels and 70% to any individual wheel respectively where traction is needed. You can turn Dynamic Stability Control off by holding the DTC button down at any time, but in most situations, you will not need to do that. |
