I will never buy a car with a panoramic sunroof again. Been fixed five times but the car runs out of warranty at the end of the month, so roof & blind closed and will not be used again.

Did you try the rubber bumper method in this thread?

Amazing! How that little rubber bumper eliminated the most annoying creeks coming from Sun roof. Thanks Guys!

Just wondering when you applied the silicone pads onto that spot, the alignment of the glass remained same or it is lightly raised up.
Did you experience any wind noise at all when the roof fully closed and only sun shade open?
Appreciated for the info.

No issue with fitment issues. The plastic is much more flexible than the steel and glass. Don't worry about it.

no issues if you are concern about water leaks.

I'm glad this thread is pulled out of the dust bin at the start of each winter. Two dollar fix that is dead easy. 😁

I found some Scotch pads and stacked them about 6 high and placed them on the spot that was recommended in this post and problem solved. I drove around town for an hour enjoying the rattle free car!

I wish I found this thread earlier. I spent quite some time to find where the creaks comes from.
I had felt tape under that plastic piece already, but it was shiny flat and useless. All I did - put a tiny bit of grease there. I believe the grease will absorb into felt and that will keep the problem from re-occurring. Cost - 0.1c, time <1min.

The rubber bumper also worked perfectly for me. It's been about a year since I added them and still silent as a mouse. For anyone that cares about such things, I used these which pretty much are an exact match to the size and shape of the mounting spot: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Does anyone's moonroof look different from the pictures that lbjgh provided? I don't have those kinds of mounts on my roof, and the creaking seems to come from under the long plastic piece sitting between the front and back panes of glass. That piece feels like it's held up against the glass with an elastic, when I pull it down (even slightly), the creaking stops.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'll try to snap some pics when I can (the wife has the car during the day).

Mine was the same, the rubber mounts will push that plastic piece down a bit, stopping the creaking. At least it did for me, and it seems many others here.

Just put the rubber bumpers on the moon roof of my wife's X3. She says the creaking sound is gone. Hopefully they stay in place.

I think I have the same as you (2015 x335i). I brought my car in for the child seat fastener recall and oil change/inspection and I told them that when driving I sometimes hear a sort of tapping that seems to come from the long plastic piece you describe. When I push against it up toward the glass, it seems to stop it for a little bit. Anyway, they noted it.

When I got my car back, the service invoice said that they verified the sound, checked it for fitment, readjusted the roof, tested it again and did not hear the sound anymore. I haven't heard the sound anymore but also, it's just been a few days so let's see if it comes back.

fingers crossed it doesn't!

not an x3, but it is a similar panoramic sunroof on an e91 3-series wagon.

Thing is mine seems to be a little different than most. For me it seems to occur when the shade is closed. When the shade is retracting i can hear it faintly making similar sounds as it goes, but when it's fully retracted it doesn't seem to make any creaking noises.

So it seems like the shade itself or the tracks it's on? any ideas on a remedy, or is it gonna come down to replacing the shade?

The American factory is the thought that comes to mind. This kind of problem is not unusual with mid to low end USA assembled vehicles. I've owned many German cars over the years. Until recently, I owned a 1989 Mercedes 300CE; its sunroof and all other interior build parts were rock solid and silent. The moonroof thing is a disappointment and I will not forget it when I am back in the market to replace my winter vehicle.

Booked the car into the dealer for them to look at, they said on first visit that one of the seals was misaligned. This was not causing the problem but they said that they wanted to replace it in case it caused a problem later. Car had to be booked in following week for them to order seal. I think the creaking noise is known issue with the X3(see other postings on this thread) as they dis not quibble and told me they would have to take out the sunroof. In the end the car was in the workshop for a couple of days, partly as they admitted it was the first X3 roof done at the dealership.
But full credit to the dealer the car is now fine and they also sorted a rattle at the back.
Not sure what they did as had to pick up the car quickly from the dealer and as the work was done under warranty I got no invoice.
Having had several BMW's before all of which had bomb proof build quality it leads me to think that QC standards have dropped, not sure if this is due to it being built in USA (compared to German manufacture)?
Car is UK spec.

I did this last night after revisiting this during our week off of work.

I have plenty of rubber bumpers so I put one on each side of the lever/standoff piece and it fixed the creaking noise immediately.

Thank you guys for documenting this and making it a quick 60-second fix!
