Can you patch a run flat tire?

Got a nail in my front left tire. So pissed... only have 3400 miles on my x3.

Two questions:

- Can it be patched? I read mix reviews regarding repairing run flat tires.

- the nail is near the edge of the tire tread, I really need to bring my car to the tire store and see if they can fix it. If it can be repaired -- would you?

Officially no, but if it's in the tread area and just a simple puncture it can be patched. It's not possible if the sidewall has been damaged.

I've had my e90's runflats patched a couple of times.

What brand?

The Bridgestone Generation 3 RFT can be puncture repaired - but the Gen I and II apparently should not be repaired.

Dont know about the other brands... I only have the Bridgestones.

The Gen 3 were started to be rolled out from early / mid 2010 in different countries, sometimes with a new product name in different markets.

I got a flat on the Goodyear LS2's that were on my 35i loaner and the dealer patched it. They said the puncture has to be just in the right spot to do so. They did end up replacing the tire because it was a loaner, but if it were mine to keep, they said I could have kept driving on it. I drove around for 2 days with it while waiting for the new tire to come in and it was fine.

Like all tires, it depends on where the puncture is and how amenable it is to repair. It just happens that there are more "off-limits" parts of the tire on a RFT where you can't do a repair. But there are still many cases where a repair is just fine.

Post RFT Patch

Do not patch the tire. It is covered by a road hazzard warentee, and with the low milage the replacement tire might be free or almost so. I had a similar problem with my Pirelli's, the dealer wanted $$$ for a new tire, when I pushed hard, they caved and sent the tire to Pirelli and got a free replacement. There is a Tire Warentee Informtion CD in your delivery package which covers this for your tire. Until this year, there was no warentee, now there is. Also check out this months Roundel it has a letter to the editior on this subject, how the dealers are rippin us off on tire failures.

Officially yes, even on the web site and warranty of most brands of rft's it says you can repair them. I got a nail in my Clubman S Pirelli's and my 335 i's Bridgestones and both were repaired with no problems. Had 800 miles on the Clubman when it happened and now have over 19,000 miles on it. Unless its on the sidewall (I don't know how you could accomplish that) it shouldn't be a problem.

I took it to the local tire store and they told me that normally, they can patch a run flat tire. It will just cost a bit more since it's a RF.

Unfortunately, mine is not patchable due to the location of the nail.

And guess what, the Good Year Eagle LS2 is on back order!!!! I tried the "BMW stealer" and NO LUCK!!!

Now I am extremely pissed. My car is NEW and only has 3400 miles. You would think most of the parts (including tires) for a brand new vechicle SHOULD be avaliable.

The guy in Boston BMW stealer told me that he might be able to find me one and need to call him back tomorrow and see. I hope he can find one for me. I seriously don't want to buy another type/brand because if I were to buy a different tire, I would have to buy two tires instead of one.

Back in June when I got my flat, it took them two days to get in a tire and they said they never keep them in stock. One more reason to ditch the run flats!!

think your talking about road hazard warranty that does not cover normal flats, only if you have a blow out cuz of a slash or larger object on the road..

But our X3 does not come with a spare tire.... isn't it a bit risky not to have a run flat, even though it is a pain to find a replacement tire...

But again, M3 doesn't come with spare tires either!!

Its this issue about access to repairs and the even bigger issue of tyre (tire) replacement is the main reason that when we pick up our 30d next week, we'll be ditching the OEM Dunlop runflats and changing over - not just to conventional tyres with a spare - but for Australia is a more commonly available tyre size. We have an even bigger problem here in Australia that once you leave one of the major cities, there is next to no support for the repair of runflats and an even bigger wait for any replacements. The Dunlop runflats that are coming on the Australian spec X3s aren't even listed on the Dunlop Australian or even International websites. Good luck in trying to find a replacment tyre if one is are needed.

I haven't read the manual/warranties but most likely if they cover anything it would the tires (rubber part). I wouldn't exactly call the tire and wheel warranty BS as it covers not only the tires but also the wheels (metal part). While the tires are more likely to become damaged the wheels do occasionally get damaged if you hit it hard enough on say a pothole or get curb rash.

I'm not sure how your dealership structures the warranty but if you can get the tire and wheel warranty for $700 or at least at a discount I'd say go for it. The dealership that I got my X3 at was charging by the year and $700 was only for 1 or 2 years and 5 years was close to $2k. I was in a hurry that day and did not feel like bargaining, however I think you should try your luck and see how much you can get them to sell it for.

Most tires that you buy should come with some type of warranty. I had continental conti sports or pros (can't remeber which) on my old car and they are the worst tires I've ever had, popped 3 of them in 2 years and got 2of them replaced under continental's warranty, not from the dealer.

I think the warranty also depends on the size of the wheels.. My CA said since I had 19", it was 1400 for 5 yrs.. it wud hav been cheaper if I had 18 or 17s

Depends

I had a screw in my ContiWinter Viking 2 run flat. They were able to patch it because the puncture wasn't near or on the sidewall. However, it is not recommended to patch it too many times.

I was told by the dealer that on older versions of the RFT tires that it wasn't possible to patch them. But the newer ones can be patched.

To patch or not patch, as has been mentioned already, depends of whether you drove the flat tyre or not. If you discover the puncture in time and you did not use the RFT "feature" (and the hole is not on the side), there should be no problem...
