Hi,

I am a week in to ownership of a new X3. Generally enjoying the car other than parking it (trying to get to grips with the size of the car after moving up from a VW Golf).

Anyway, I wondered if it's possible to get Auto Hold and Auto Wipers to stay on full time? At the moment, both turn themselves off every time ignition is turned off. I'm used to them staying on in the Golf and it's annoying I can't seem to do that in the X3.

I cannot comment on the wipers, but when you go over a certain speed with Auto Hold on, you get a warning and it gets turned off.

It does on my late 2013 X3 xDrive 30d M Sport.

May well be the case with my car as well if I go a certain speed. It definitely goes off when I turn off the ignition though... really annoying as it's a feature I just want on in the background permanently. If I want it off, I want to have the option of doing that myself rather than having to reactivate it every time I start the engine again (same with auto wipers)

Auto wipers can be a problem in a car wash. How does VW deal with that? Is there some special car wash setting? Or do to the auto wipers not work when the car is in Neutral? Just curious.

Hi,

i generally avoid automated car washes as they do more harm than good to paint finishes. In this situation however, the wipers would not engage as the the car is idling in neutral

I have the same want with regards to the wipers.

With my previous car (mk3 Skoda Octavia vRS) the wipers when on auto were actually on the intermittent setting (physical switches rather than bmws soft switches) and would happily work as long as the ignition was on - neutral or not.

In a car wash you would need to turn the wipers off by moving the wiper "lever" from I to 0. Incidentally intermittent wipe was available by turning off auto wipers from the infotainment and then the sensitivity switch was the intermittent speed instead.

I believe this is the same setup as all MQB cars (golf, Octavia,a3 etc). I have the same issue with car washes as well.

Both features can neither be configured through idrive or coding. Personally, I would not want either to be on every vehicle start. What would make more sense is Auto-H tied to timing of doors auto-locking. I use auto-H all the time, but systems is annoying and I would disable pulling in and out of parking spaces.

It depends on type of car wash. There are some automated systems that will end up causing damage to wheels or paint, while others do a good job. Either way, the comments are valid that you would not want auto wipers through washes. Obviously, programmed correctly the system would work better. Then again, it has been a while since a lived in area with regular rain.

I live in Manchester, the rain capital of the UK, so being able to have the wipers activate themselves without me needing to press the switchgear every time would be useful.

The only time when I would want to disengage auto hold is when parking, other than that it would be good to have it on all the time.

I've never tried coding before (if these options are realistic) - looks a bit daunting.

I agree it would be nice if you lived in a hilly area, but as stated previously, even if you were to be able to code it for auto hold for when you started the car, it would be pointless because you get a warning at somewhere around 20 mph that it has been disabled.

Auto-H does not get disabled. It just works whenever you come to complete stop.

You are of course correct! I have been having a senior moment and was getting my underpants in a twist. I blame the Scotch Whisky during this festive season for my schoolboy error. Sorry. It is the Hill Descent that gets disabled after 37 mph and has to be enabled again after 22 mph.
