City driving averaging light traffic about 19 mpg ave.
350 mile trip from upstate NY through Pa to NJ (light mountains, max elevation about 1200 feet) 24 mpg ave. That is also always taking 9 mph above the posted speed limit (65 + 9 = 74 mostly) and cruise control. Similar results on round trip from upstate NY to Ottawa. Not at all unpleased with what I am seeing. |

Average around 20 mpg around town. One long trip (1500 miles) with an average of just over 24 mpg....car was fully loaded travelling at Interstate highway speeds.

Average in the city is about 23-24mpg. On the highway using cruise at like 75 mph it is about 32-33mpg! I'm very happy with the mileage.

Just looked. Ours shows 22mpg (US) on the trip computer over 6000 miles of combined suburban/highway driving.
Our daily run is 15 miles of busy highway, and then a bit of driving round the shops at the weekends etc. Our old Explorer showed 15mpg over an equivalent measure. My wife sees it as a smaller tank to fill ($30 instead of $50), which is ALSO filled less often. |

Are you talking about the 2.0T N20? If so, mine is in my sig. The seat time is split 50-50 between my wife and myself, but from a distance perspective it's 1/3 city, 2/3 highway

35i combined mileage has been 27 mpg. Not sure if the premium gas in my area that contains no ethanol may be a contributing factor.

I don't understand how some are getting 24 MPG on the highway and some are getting 32 MPG on the highway. I can understand a little variance, but 8 is huge.
I'm thinking about purchasing a X3 28 and if I can get 32 MPG on the highway, that would be great. 24 might make me reconsider. I do a lot of highway driving. |

On my first 400 miles in my new 35i (almost all highway) I got about 26 mpg. Since then (almost all city) I'm getting about 19 mpg. Exactly what I was expecting from the EPA ratings and better than my wife's '11 E90.
All my figures were done manually after fill ups. I just turned 1200 miles and have driven gently for the break-in period. I've tried to stay in Eco-Pro mode as well as using the auto on/off since I have a number if 3 and 4 minute long stop lights near my home and hate burning gas while sitting at them.

For comparison:
I'm getting 18.7mpg on average over the last month in my 2014 X3 28i according to the trip computer. This is mostly commuting over local roads, with hills, and a five mile stretch of highway, typically run at about 80mph (with traffic). Also, the commute is short - about 15 or 20 minutes, so the engine is cold for a good part of it. Basically, harsh conditions where fuel economy is concerned. That same commute in my previous 2008 E90 335i (N54 engine) returned 19.2mpg on average. Given that the E90 was RWD and about 600lbs. lighter, the X3 seems to be doing pretty well in comparison. My guess is that an X3 35i would be seeing about 16mpg over the same stretch. I had a few reasons for sticking with the N20 when I bought my X3 (and would do it again, without hesitation, after owning my car for six months), but I must say that, while the N20 is a great engine, I do sometimes miss the instant, always there power of the N54/N55! |

The EPA rated the X3 at the top of its class when BMW introduced the new 2.0L turbocharged engine (engine code N20) in to the 28i model. http://www.autotrader.com/research/a...p-of-class.jsp Based on controlled tests, the X3 is a fantastic performer when it comes to fuel economy. If you're curious how well the X3 performs relative to other cars in the same test, you can check EPA.gov: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymod...emodelNF.shtml If you're interested in how the car performs in daily life, then you shouldn't be surprised to find that people's lives, commutes, and driving characteristics vary greatly. Our average MPG currently sits at 24.7 MPG. My daily drive is strictly city, with longer trips on weekends in the 50-100 mile range. I frequently drive the car in Eco Pro mode with ASS (auto-stop-start) disabled. This dulls the throttle response, and provides a blue guide bar under the speedometer, which I try to respect. I find it really helps me maintain a reasonable fuel economy standard, versus my 135i where I had a bad tendency to, uh, "endulge"

Our 2011 35 overall average for 30K miles is around 24 - 25 mpg; light city driving with most local trips around 15 miles and in the 30-45 mph range. While we have seen 30+ on some portions of road trips, a more realistic number for road trips is 28 - 29 mpg and that is definitely a direct and nonlinear function of speed.
It looks like the 28i may achieve somewhat better mileage in both heavy city driving and open road. If you can get into the low 30s on road trips, that is definitely better. In the end and in the real world where most of us area faced with a fair amount of low speed/city driving, both vehicles are pretty close, a testimony to the efficiency of both engines. No doubt the 35i weighs a bit more too. But, overall, it seems to me that the big 28i savings is with the original vehicle price and not so much with the overall fuel economy. |

In my experience most folks say city driving and when you prove further you need to calibrate to your definition of city.
Our 2014 35i in CITY driving (city roads under 30 mph speed) gets 15.2 maximum in Comfort. I get less in Sport. This being said I gave had >26 on strict highway at ~72mph. If someone says they get 20 around town with a 35i I would probe for more info.

I don't mind talking facts, figures, and experience, but telling somebody how they should feel "you shouldn't be surprised" comes across as a little condescending, especially when it's said twice. Just saying. Last edited by JoeyO; 11-01-2013 at 08:29 AM.. |
