Loud metallic exhaust rattle at cold start

Good morning yall

I thought I would ask the question here and see if there is an easy solution for my X3. I have noticed at cold start, I have a VERY loud metallic rattle out of the exhaust, right at the exhaust, for about 10 seconds or so. After that it goes away until the next cold start.

I am guessing there is some cold start flapper or valve maybe on the exhaust? Maybe?

Is this common and any suggestions?

Thanks!

Is this common? If the car is kept outside under extreme weather conditions daily, then yes. It is a BMW after all. There is a baffle within the exhaust (it looks like a flap). On idle, the baffle is closed and when you press the accelerator, the baffle opens. This mechanism is either jammed due to crud or needs replacement. http://mixedwiki.com/bmw-x3-muffler-rattle-fix/
Also could be a loose vacuum line or bolts.

Thank you so much! I just pulled that plug and will see if that fixes it.. 5 seconds total, and if fixed, a bloody miracle!

Thank you!

This 100 percent. I had the same thing on my 07 X3 earlier this month in the extreme cold.

Yup.. I pulled that plug which controls that flap, so now it stays permanently open, no noise.
