<10 MPG on 2020 X3M

Hey all , Wanted to ask why the hell im getting such horrible mpg on my X3M. I live in Austin TX and even do a fair bit of highway driving. I hardly go downtown and even then when i do there is never alot of stop and go traffic.

any tips on how to increase MPG because i hardly drive and have to fill up every 5-7 days its absurd.

I get 12/13 city and up 25/26 highway cruising around 70 mph. My commute to work is probably 85% highway 15% in town and average about 25 mpg on a 30 mile commute which is great. But my monthly consumption is around 21 mpg, the short trips when the engine isn't getting all the way to optimal operating temp sees the worst mpg - if that's where most your driving is then it makes sense. Try a longer trip cruising around 70 mph on the highway and see what you get.

only posted because after searching i saw many X3M owners say they get 15+ mpg and some even near 20.

given im getting 3 less than city and not doing all city , its seems concerning but seems its par for the course among the comments here.

yep most of my trips are 10-15 minutes, where i might hop on the highway for 10 minutes of it and then pop off. much appreciated.

Maybe but what a waste to buy a high performance car and try to hypermile it. Boring.

Hahah. I have owned mine for a month and get about 10mpg or so. On the highway if I put it in automatic and efficiency mode I can get 20 or over. But I don’t have a commute and mostly drive around town. And I basically drive it like my manual M3. I have it in sport plus, S3 and hold the gears in the higher rpm and shift often. I tend to average 15mpg in the M3 but I suppose horsepower really needs fuel huh?

I think you need a tune.
10mpg still pretty good for that many open road in Austin.
I believe I was at 12-14mpg when I had mine during COVID lockdown where LA road and highway was opened up as the way it supposed to be.

Averaging under 10 does seem a bit off if you have some highway driving in there. Are you sure you are looking at the right numbers? If you go into the trip computer you can see your avg mpg for the life of the car or you can set a new point to start calculating mpg.

How many miles? Last time plugs were changed?

Are you using 93? I only put in 93 super in mine. More specifically 93+ from Shell. Been told their gas is really good. Dont get shit from Costco or BJ’s or any of those big box grocery stores that sell cheap gas.

What these things need is a larger tank, it’s the constant trips to fill up that sucks

If you put it in neutral and push it the mpgs will go increase.

But seriously I read how bad the mpgs were before buying and still bought it. It’s a M so wasn’t expecting to see anything over 19mpg.

If it makes you feel better I’m getting 8 mpg on my daily driven Evo x and have to fill up every 3 days lol

Worth every penny

Don't know about 2020 - but C/D did a review on the 2024 X3Mc and got like combined 19mpg.

75mph hwy route - they got 25.

https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/x3-m

If you are gunning it everywhere or sitting in traffic - I guess 10 mpg is expected. Seems low to me.

Picked mine up April 2023, since that time I’m averaging ~15.5mpg according to the “Car Info” tab. I pretty much drive it like it’s stolen though lol.

I got 21.9 MPG driving from Leander to Kyle last Friday. Stop/Go traffic on Mopac and 35. Will have to see what I get when driving to the office 17 miles away,.

Well first commute in the the X4M comp.
40 miles each way with 80% motorway.
Took it easy just to see what I could achieve. Fluttering around 60-70 mph max on motorway keeping it in economy and 8th when possible. Realistically averaging 45-50mph as commute is a bit stop and start even on motorway.
It was 17-18 before I hit the motorway with a final journey of 30mpg.
Wow. Well impressed.

The Fuelly app shows 14mpg for past 13k miles for my X3MC. Usually in sport+ everything when I drive it.

Bought a CPO G20 for local errands and junk miles and getting 22mpg overall in sport mode. Feels more agile and better low end torque for city driving than F97.

Try this.. sports plus engine, gearbox on 1, 98/93 fuel (I use BP), tyre pressure around 36 psi round if you want better mpg.

I found that efficient uses quite a lot of fuel as you have to press the pedal further down. On sports plus, you can just tap the pedal.

Mine is set on UK mpg

are you smashing on it every chance you get? if so nicccceee

but usually as stated Im sure somewhere above that heavy foot is your enemy when it comes to mpg in city.
