I don't think it's possible to use an oil extractor anymore. There are people who have added the ball valve quick drains . I think BMWs require the adapter to fit. It would e nice to add them as I have 3 vehicles and sometimes I end up doing all 3 around the same time.

spot on, perfect write up

just did an oil change on my new-to-me 2011 xdrive 28; it only has 26k miles on it...piece of cake...Mobil 1 0w40 Eu spec is on sale at WalMart, $20.99 for 5 quarts...drained oil was VERY black...BUT

I wanted to verify the accuracy of the I-drive oil level indicator; so, I intentionally put only 6 quarts back in..expecting to see 'low oil' indication of some kind...

I-drive says 'Full' ??? even after driving it a couple of days.

what's up with that ?? a defective oil level sensor?? already ??? oh, for an old-fashioned dipstick.

regards, dan

I think when you reset the oil indication for service it expects you to have the proper amount of oil added. It sets itself to level @ your 6 quarts . Driving cycle measures the amount it sees over course of time an then that value changes then it lets you know you are 1/4QT low , 1/2qt low, 3/4qt low , and 1 qt low .

I think you can add some safely and it would not change the amount significantly. But I wasn't sure that the 28i took as much as the 6cylinder turbo. I would have re-read some threads to confirm.

I did my 35i today. First change out of warranty. Two observations:

1. As nasty as that oil looked at 8000 miles, there's no way I'd let it go until the service indicator said it was due.

2. When resetting the indicator, after turning on the ignition I had to wait until the "service due" indicator went out and the odometer display came up before pressing the button in order to access the service menu. Otherwise, I could hold the button indefinitely and nothing happened.

Thanks for the write...we just acquired a 14' M-Sport 28i X3 w/20K so I'll be performing basic maintenance on it shortly. It's truly a shame that I cannot use my extractor for oil changes. In reviewing the attached video above, I couldn't help but chuckle when oil drained straight onto the guy's hands once the drain bolt was removed. This seems unavoidable though.

I just did my oil change using this as my guide, thank you Mposter! My question is how do you get the oil out of the filter cup? I ended up wiping it with shop rags to clean it out, see the picture I took where I poured some new oil which did not drain either

I used some shop towels but I guess after a few times I just decided it was not worth the hassle. There is used oil in the oil cooler that doesn't get drained so the new filter just catches that stuff .

Turkey baster gets most of it, the rest stays. Don't want to risk lint from shop towels.

^This, just grab a couple of turkey basters the next time you are at the dollar store, they come in handy.

You are not getting rid of all of the oil 100% when you drain it from the drain plug anyways so the little bit of oil in the cup isn't going to hurt

Thanks Mposter for the great instructions!

I finally did this today and it really was easy. Toughest part is taking the o rings off I have a 28i and I had to eyeball the extra quart from the 2nd 5 quart jug. I did the 'check oil' test and of course it says 'max'. I wonder how accurate that thing is...I know I'm not that good.

I don't think it's accurate at all. When changing the oil on our 15 X3 28i (N20) I put 5L in, about 5.25 quarts. It always reads max. I've seen others posters say they've put 4 quarts in or as much as 6. Everyone says it reads max. Supposedly that's how it's designed, to be tolerant of up to +/- 1 quart.

Thanks for bringing up the differences for the N20 motor.
Mywikimotors dot com says the N20 has an engine oil capacity of 5.3 quarts, which is basically what was described above.
Edit :
Just updated original post to include N20 engine quantity as 5.3 quarts.
Please be careful as to not overfill or frothing may occur or drainage issues for the turbo drain may occur .

If overfilled you can loosen the drain bolt and set a cup under it marked with the half quart amount or so you went over. It will drain slow since you would only be backing it off a few threads to create a leak.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Its interesting that on all my oil changes covered by the dealer, they say they put in 7 quarts on my '13 X3 28xi. After I went for a drive from the 'max' reading, it then showed I was probably 3/4 of the way full.

When you look at this site, it says 6.1 quarts. http://www.automobile-catalog.com/auta_details1.php

I looked at your website. The link you provided took me to an 850i. Anyway I navigated through and found for the 2013 28i that it has an oil capacity of 6.1 U.S. Quarts. So somewhere in between 5 and 6 quarts should be okay it seems.
Hopefully we can have a tech confirm what the actual refill value is. Maybe 6.1 is empty and 5.3 is refill.

Awesome..thanks Mposter!

After I measured the oil originally, and it was closer to the min range, I topped it to 7 quarts before I read this, thinking I could just drain a little afterwards. I went for a ride, measured it again, and it was between min and max....grrr..I wish we had dipsticks.
