Part-ex values and new car discounts

Considering changing my car. I've got a quote from a local BMW dealer against a new X3. While the PCP quote includes a generous discount against the X3, the part ex value seems very low for my 63 plate 125i (low mileage, well-specced and in excellent condition). I know, I know - options count for nothing come re-sale time but the car is still low mileage and in excellent condition.

I realise it's all about cost to change but would be interested to hear about any recent experiences with part-ex values and discounts on new BMWs in the UK.

We have purchased to BMW's from our local dealer and had non BMWs to trade in. To be fair he has offered us close to book price on both and an overall good deal to boot.
Some people claim to have success selling to WeBuyAnCar type places - but I dont know anyone myself.
Best to look at the overall deal...

Thank you for the feedback. Having done some more research, I think the current overall deal has some room for improvement given offers elswhere.

The issue with BMW is because of the top loaded discounts, come trade-in you take a real hit. As you rightly stated for you it's the cost of change. If your considering buying your new car on a PCP I would advise you look around you should find more competitive offers. I am using Oracle finance for my Upcoming Macan.

Only problem is the the price Porsche have offered me for my current X3, means I need to consider over alternatives sale avenues.

£3,500-5,000 is the profit dealers can make on flipping a decent specced 1 or 3-series.

Look their website for a car with similar specs and mileage as your car. Then deduct £3,500-5,000 to get a rough figure for how much your car is worth to them. However, if they offer a very generous discount on the new car, you can unlikely squeeze them for top money for your trade-in.

I don't know where you live but if you are looking to get the best deal buy your car further north. I did it for my two recent BMW's and not only saved money on the purchase price but got better finance deals.

Agreed. I used to travel to Doncaster for VW and Audi some years ago. Recently on the newer UK BMW forum....
https://www.bmwlander.co.uk/index.php
there was a friend of mine from Aberdeen who purchased an F31 330d from a BMW dealer in Newcastle.

Having said that the dealers down south have become wise to this and they can match the deals when pushed a little. Some years ago I purchased a new BMW on the web and when I had concluded the deal that included Part Ex for my 120d, they said put the phone down and the dealer will ring you. Within 5 minutes the franchise from Reading rang me.

In my view you should shop around and say to them please quote the best deal because if someone beats your quote, their will be no second chance. You just have to be hard nosed about the whole process. Let's face it, it is your money.

Actually my salesman has called to tell me that he could make me a very interesting offer on replacing my X3 with... another X3. Haven't got details yet; my current X3 is just out of warantee, and I was thinking of waiting for the new model; unless he puts something very interesting on the table...

Of course you can get a good discount on a new X3 now. The present model will be replaced next year by the G01 .
So: the dealer calculates next years depreciation into a higher discount today. He is right in doing so, but has no choice, for otherwise nobody would buy a dated model.

Why not look at the MB GLC ? Its a new model and available now. I might be tempted myself...

Endre2 is right. It's a final model year for the F25 so it's no wonder your dealer want to sell you another X3. Besides that, it's summer and there's still plenty of 2016 models on dealer lots, so don't feel flattered if he makes an attractive offer.

Be wary if he is selling you a discounted car with poor specs and if it's a decent specced car I wouldn't settle for less than £4-5k discount.

On my purchase in March-April for 3.0d Msport, i got 22% discount and for p-x got webuyanycar.com +1.5k for 330d xdrive .
I took an F25 pre- registered deal with 4 miles on the clock (delivery).. For a non pre-reg, the best deal I could get was about £4K less in value to me... Plus 4 month waiting time to build .
If you plan to keep for some time, and don't care about being second owner on logbook, pre- registered can be very efficient .
The downside is that you don't tend to get everything exactly as you might choose it on configuration, but dealers tend to spec the pre-registered units quite generously ..

Blimey I *did* look just now a the GLC, and it's lacking the 3L engine I want, other than that it's nearly 8k less than the x3 I speced -- helpfully emailed that to the Sytner salesman to munch on ;-)

And, MS has a better choice of exterior colors. BMW is actually dead boring on the LCI.

Yes. The missing 3 litre donkey is a big let down.

22% discount? How did you managed that? Does the car have good equipment?

The GLC 250 d has 204 hp and 500 Nm torque. Standard is a 9 speed automatic. You should take it for a testdrive maybe.
A bigger engine is available in the GLE (up to 585 hp...).

I think the GLC is a far better car than the X3. When I bought my X3 , I also looked at the Mercedes GLK, but I did not like the boxy design.
But the new GLC is another matter ! It looks real sharp.

I really might buy one next year, as soon as my warranty ends in april. I will not drive the N20 without warranty ! Too many broken engines around!

3.0d msport plus, 20" rims, folding mirrors, service pack, reverse camera, servotronic isteering, split folding seats , pro-nav, HK audio, xenon .. Only thing it didn't have I wanted was VDC but in the end, not an issue .

Was 2 weeks after new 16 reg came out - that month is then hard to hit sales figures for dealer sales team, so they were desperate for a deal. It was one of the large groups who pre-order a load of models and then register them all .. Then turn them quickly as pre-reg. They make more on the finance and other goodies they sell .. I only took finance , nothing else (decent APR about 7%)...

Timing is key - plus flexibility. I didn't test drive the final car, just the demonstrator : signed paperwork and 3 days later the car arrived at the dealership.

There are probably some tax advantages for dealers to pre-register cars (or franchise incentives) and then they need to shift them quick ..

Euro to £ not so good now, so I'd expect I was lucky on timing ...

Impressive car you got there. Congrats!
I got a great deal when I bought my March-build in May. However, having a snoop on the BMW website in June/July I spotted a few gems at amazing prices with top specs.

If I trade in my X3 for the next one, I will definitely make the trade 1-3 months after the introduction of a new model year.

Lovely looking on outside.. Inside will be a marmite reaction. Personally. Love it from outside, but I'd be put off by the garish interior .. The stuck on screen for examplem is awful, not to keen on the curvy column .. I can see it will appeal to many though.. Contrast with the f25 interior which infind very understated with focus on high quality , great ergonomics and less 'bling'....

I like the GLC interior, and I like my X3 interior also. Cannot say which one I like better. But that is personal of course.
I do think that the I Drive system of BMW is the best in the business. More important to me is the reliabililty of the engine, and the N20 seems to have serious issues (according to various forums in EU).

buze : the GLC will be available with a 6 cylinder Diesel engine by the end of this year, according to the german press. (GLC 350 d 4 matic). 258 hp and 620 Nm torque.
