Go with X3 35i M package now or wait?
Hello Everyone,
As peers with the same passion I welcome your advice and feedback. I have been without a vehicle since turning my 2007 X5 4.8 in last June! I have been using rentals, loaners, etc. until I make my decision. It is getting really old! My ideal vehicle seems to be the future X3M (which is speculation at this point. I really have a passion for getting an M vehicle. I thought about M3 but I don't think it will be for me over the long haul). From the boards it seems like this may not be out until 2012 or 2013. I am hesitating to pull trigger on a 2012 X3 35i with M package in September because of the speculation of what might come after the 2012 production ends in March of 2012. At this point in my life having had 2 X5s I want to commit to my next vehicle for the long term. Do you think it is realistic to wait for X3M or should I pull trigger now, then after my lease re-evaluate options and decide direction then? Thank you in advance!

Honestly at this moment I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer on if the X3M will come out soon or in the 2012 model year. If they do decided to make a X3M it would be a great car to do it with as it is a great size and would help bridge the gap between the next cheapest M suv which would be the X5M at $86k. Along with the rumored X3M there's also speculation that there is going to be a X1M but since they're only rumors it up to you to believe them and wait or to buy another car since it seems you're renting/loaning right now.

Why wait? The X3M may be a while yet, or never??
Get a properly-equipped X3 35i MSport now, with DDC and you should enjoy it a lot. I came from an E90 M3 and am very happy with my 35i MSport w DCC. Just my 2c.

This is the type of feedback that will push me to pull the trigger now versus later! Thank you, thank you!

Good points - plus, if you need more power, the N55 has huge tuning potential.

0-60 in 5.2 seconds for a 5000+ pound vehicle is more than enough (faster than the X3 35i). I don't mean to drive you away from the X3, because I love mine, but if I was going from an X5, I'd like another X5. Here's the configuration. $6000 less and still blisteringly fast and agile, especially with the Active Steering and Adaptive Drive. |

If they do produce an X3M, it would probably be 2013 at the earliest. If 2012 was on the table, there would be mules out already and the auto press would be all over it. Also, if the X3M is to be the proving ground for the tri-turbo that is rumored to be the new M3 motor, there is no rush because the F30 M3 is probably a couple years away.
That said, I completely get your anst. But, if you get the X335 M Sport and maybe add DHC as Tuco44 suggests, I don't think you'd be unhappy. The 35i is surprisingly powerful and quick. Tough decision, but you can always trade up in two years and not lose too much if you keep equity in the vehicle. Or maybe try a lease, if that fits your lifestyle?

But I'm not saying price per se that's getting cheaper, but how the lower models of BMW are being made into m cars. Sort of makes them not as exclusive I guess. |

X5's dimensions throughout my ownership. I like that the X3 is more like the old X5. The old X5 size was perfect!

I agree with your assessment above. The new X3 size is, IMO, the perfect size for me - essentially two persons, very occasionally 3 or 4.
I have driven the current X5 and find it largish. Also, why pay more to buy it and run it. The N55 engine is more responsive in the new X3 than in the current X5 as the X5 weighs about a 1000# more. So, to get performance, one then considers the larger V8 for the X5. The X5 makes sense if diesel is really appealling to you, but that would be the only thing that would get me to get an X5. Just my 2c.

I wish ventilated multi-contour seats were offered on the X3, along with active cruise control and an actual comfort mode...and soft touch door-side buckets...and LED turn signals... Okay I'm done whining. I love my car. |

I love the multi-contour seats in our X5, which is one of the main reasons it will be taking us on a long vacation drive while the X3 stays home in the garage. The X3 seats are essentially 3 Series seats. Not that they are bad (sports seats of course), but for long range comfort you cannot beat those wonderful X5 seats.
