Windshield repair or replace?
Anybody know if the windshield replacement is easy on the X3. The car is only one week old, already spent one day in the dealer (radio) and now has a small chip right in the drivers view (almost perfectly center). It is not a huge star crack (1.5mm dia pit with a 3 to 4 mm impact circle) but in an quite annoying location. Should I just replace the windshield (breaking the factory seals) or repair it (while waiting to get more chips and cracks before replacing it) ?

Try a repair first. They do some amazing work nowadays. That would be preferable to a full windshield replacement for sure.
For some reason, chips always end up right in front of the driver's view where they will annoy you to no end. Just for once, I'd like to get a chip somewhere else where it can be ignored... |

My wife got a chip in her windshield a year ago. She chose to have it repaired. When she brought the car home she actually had to point out where the repair had been done. I still have to look really hard to find it. Try the repair first and see how it looks.

I'd call a repair place and ask for a quote and ask them what it'll look like when done. Use Yelp and search for glass or windshield repair

I had windshield replaced about 10 years ago ( not at a dealership). They essentially had to break the existing windshield to get it out. I found glass shards in my car for months. They were tiny, but they were all over the place.

You can buff something like that out -- see a glass specialist. Don't let the dealer replace the glass for such a minor scratch -- your door will never be the same. I'd live with it before I'd replace the glass, but seriously, a good glass shop can make that much less visible.
