need to lock key in car

So after traveling family is going to leave our x3 at the airport for us in short term parking for an hour or two. We need them to lock the key in the 2013 x3. I can't figure out a way to do this.

Obviously, I'll have the other with me when we arrive.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Just take the manual key out of the main key and lock the car manually and just place the key in one of the exhausts or place it on the inside of one of the tires or on top of one of the wheels, just somewhere people wouldn't think of searching

Very risky in a public car park .... IF someone did discover the key ...... I think the insurance would be invalidated for the theft ! ....

Have them keep the key and return it to you later.

Edit - its easy - lock the doors with a passenger door open,. drop key in side pocket then lose the door - the alarm will then arm and the doors will lock ..... works over here in UK.

What about taking the battery out of the fob then leave them both hidden somewhere like under the seat?

(I'm a Braves Fan too! I live in Kennesaw.)

@ Bravesfan16
I don't understand why you have to leave the keys in it? Why not take it with you?

If you have the second set of keys, why do you need them to leave you the 1st set of keys?

Agreed. What's the problem with letting the first party take the key they used with them after locking the car? If you, the second party, have your own key, you're all set.

You can retrieve the fob from the first party later. Just tell them to lock the car and keep the key they used.

You can also lock the car from your phone using the phone app....BMW Remote.

This is what we will end up doing. The reason this is not our best solution is my folks live an a hour and half way. It will be a week before we can get the other set back. Longer family story than anyone cares to know.

I tried the locking the car with passenger door open. It locks the doors, until you shut the door with the key inside and the lights flash and doors unlock.

Thanks for the help today folks. Amazing to never lock your keys in your car huh?

May depend whether you have "keyless entry" or not...

If no keyless entry - 2 methods to lock remote control in vehicle:

a) lock all doors with remote control, open hatch with dedicated hatch button (press twice on remote) - store key /remote somewhere in cargo area - then manually close boot/hatch

OR

b) leave keys in vehicle, sit inside and close all doors with dedicated button on centre console, open one door by pulling on inside handle twice, exit and close said door.

Hope this helps.

Hi
It does work - if you use the boot door. So open the boot, lock the car all the doors lock. put key in boot and shut boot.
it will work inside if the key is inside the passenger area - so long as the "sensor" does not detect it, so placing it under some stuff in the door storage works too.

(a) works, and I know because I accidentally locked the remote in the car this way.

A USPS small flat rate box is 5 bucks. Maybe just have them drop the key in the mail? Then you won't have to wait a week, if it matters.

Wrapping the key fob in foil should do the trick.

Use an altoids mints box. It looks similar to what they use at carmax for the secondary key storage within the vehicle. And no one would notice it as the obvious " valuable" item to take.

In the US, insurance protects the owner. In many cases, people who lease cars are not the owner. Or, the finance company holds title until the car is paid off. Either way, the finance company is a loss payee on the policy.

So, in the US, if someone does something stupid, short of outright damaging your vehicle, you will be covered.

maybe take the key to security and hve them safeguard it until you get there? I would opt for opening the hood and putting the key on the air cleaner and then locking and closing the hood, or open the gas door , lock car and then close gas door. I believe it will lock. the hood is the best one, you can open it from the inside, no one will look for it there and its too much trouble to search for it. all the others, top of tire, tailpipe are all obvious hiding places.

As per previous lock the key in the car, get your family to phone you then use the BMW remote app on your phone to unlock the door for them.
