iPhone Connectivity

My X3 has smartphone integration but I plan on waiting to upgrade my iPhone 3GS before buying the snap in cradle. I do want to interface my iPhone with the radio to play music so my questions go like this......

Does anyone have either of these cables? Am I right in saying that the first cable does not charge an iPhone, only the second one does? Can someone with either of these please let me know?

iPod® / iPhone® Adapter Cable
Integrates the Apple iPod or iPhone into your BMW. (PN: 61 12 0 440 812)

iPhone® Charging Cable
Allows charging for Apple iPhone and iTouch models while that device is connected through the vehicles USB/Audio interface. A must when streaming internet music which tends to deplete the iPhone’s battery fairly quickly. Tested and approved for automotive application. Fits conveniently in the center console storage compartment. (PN: 61 12 2 167 663)

Thanks in advance.

All you need is the white usb cable that came with your iPhone. The new cars no longer use the old iphone/usb y-cable.

When we did our delivery the CA recommended against using bluetooth audio streaming as it drains the battery on the iphone too quickly. I assusme that's what the second cable is for but seems like a waste of money to me. Why would you stream audio from your iphone to the car when you can just hook it up with the usb cable? Unless you are trying to stream Internet radio, like Pandora, in which case you're better off waiting for the 6NR update and new cradle.

I would wait for the next iPhone if you're about to upgrade. Don't get an iPhone4 now. Not sure on the part numbers but you'll need a media adapter rather than a standard adapter to get album artwork etc. I would wait for a few months and get the iPhone4 replacement and 6NR

As I understand it there is a phono cable and a USB cable and you need both for use of the car's aerial/antenna to boost the signal as well as utilise the USB charging

At the snails pace at which BMW releases the various iPhone cradles, I would be concerned when the upcoming iPhone 5 cradle would ship. At this rate, the iPhone 4 cradle will ship as the new phone is being announced, so it may be a while for the new one.

Ok, so if I use the USB cable that the phone came with, I should be able to play music and charge it at the same time?

I didn't know the standard the USB cable displayed artwork. Interesting. So is it only when using a cradle you need a different type for displaying artwork etc? Therefore there are two iPhone cradles: snap-in and snap-in media?

Good point. The big unknown (another one) is how different (shape, software) the iPhone 5 will be to the iPhone 4. I'm due a new iPhone in May so I may wait for the iPhone 5 to come out and physically try it in my car before agreeing to buy it. I think that's the only way you'll get a proper answer on compatibility.

But do you have to use the iPhone itself to select songs/artists or can you do it through the iDrive control and screen? I went with the "iPod your BWM" upgrade to my 3-series and it could control the iPhone / iPod selections through the screen.

I have the cradle installed, but waiting for the "media" snap in adapter -- had the other, it didn't do music. While waiting I have either the iPod Touch or the iPhone attached via a standard Apple cable in the armrest. Either gives me album art, music, etc. (even video podcasts with a static "splash screen" and the audio). I select playlists or songs from iDrive. I tried for ever to make calls from the iPod Touch, no dice . . . okay, just kidding. Did that address the question?
