F25 2.8 Exhaust Mods and Tune Questions

Hi Everyone,

We've got a 2013 X3 2.8 that we've been thinking about upgrading, and were wondering about exhaust options. I've done some research in the forum archives and also online but I was wondering if there might be any consensus on best bang for the buck without dumping $2k into a new system...or, maybe, just your thoughts on the best options overall.

It currently has an OEM exhaust, which is pretty quiet, and I'd love to open it up a bit without it getting unnecessarily harsh or offensive -- something less than a straight pipe and probably more than a resonator delete. With that in mind, does a resonator delete alone result in much change on this car?

We've also been thinking about tunes. Any thoughts on risks here specific to the F25 2.8. I've tuned cars for years and even have them on a couple of my other cars. I'm just asking whether there are any specific things to look out for with this car/engine -- or is it just the normal stuff people worry about or look out for. Any tunes to avoid? Any favorites? We're not thinking about anything too risky -- no Stage 3-type upgrades; just a simple tune -- maybe a downpipe if it's really worth it.

TIA everyone!

First before mods make sure the timing chain is done.

Thanks -- good advice! It's something I've been looking into, as well.

I've done a decent amount of work on cars in the past but it's been a while since I've considered anything as invasive as what I'm learning might be involved with the N20. Is it a DIY for the faint of heart or should I look into having it done professionally? I'm obviously concerned about not screwing things up but, if I'm being honest, I'm also concerned about down time since it's a daily for us and I don't have extra garage space.

The car only has about 67k miles on it. It's been dealer maintained annually all of its life but there's definitely chatter/noise on start-up. Any idea what people are seeing in terms of costs?
