M2 to X4M 40i?
So I'm on the wait list for the M2 (#1 right now). The M2 will become my daily driver.
Had a X6 50i -did not love the ungainly handling (and I had the full adaptive drive package) - in short, a sport utility was just not my style. Moved into a 650GC - love the fact that I'm back in a car, but this thing is also a boat (16.5 feet to be exact). So ready for something that handles again... Now the M2 will be a great handling car and... it is RWD and not only do I live in Chicago, I've really gotten used to having AWD with my last two cars. Worse, it has no sunroof. Now to some of you who live in sunny climates, you are probably ok with that. Here in dreary Chicago, I'm dreading getting into a dark interior every day. How do I know? I have a 1M and dammit every time I get in it (and I don't do that much), I look up to open the sunroof - which does not exist. So then I see an X4M at the dealer the other day while getting service - I thought - wow, this is a lot smaller than my X6 and while the leather and plastic dash kind of suck, it is no worse than what my M2 will have. Nice.... Then I see one of you running a 13.1 at the track with their X4M and think - hmmm, maybe, just maybe this might be the best of both worlds. See I've driven the 335 and 435GC - they are sloppy in terms of steering feel and overall driving dynamics. And from what I'm reading, the X4M seems to be pretty well buttoned down - even Satch C from BMW CCA says it is a completely different car from the X4 35. Thoughts here? BTW, why is it I can't add Driver's Assistance Plus without losing the Cold Weather Package? I want both - I've had the surround camera and the speed limit in my HUD and LOVE both (two more strikes against the M2). Oh and for those of you who say "you have the 1M, just drive that - I hate to say it, I freak out every time I drive that car. Always afraid that someone is going to hit me and that's the end of the car. Yea, I need help

I'll be able to give you a review shortly. I should take delivery of my '17 X4M40 this week. I've owned a 1M in the past and I have a F80 M3 currently, so I'll be able to do a pretty decent comparison.
I test drove a '16 X4 M40i and was really impressed (hence the reason I ordered one). It handles better than a standard X6 5.0 (which I also owned, although mine was a special M performance edition with stiffer bits). Not quite as stable/solid as the new X6M (nor would I expect The X4 to be - otherwise why spend the $40k premium), but it was still very capable. Similar to a Porsche Macan which I would recommend that you also test drive if you haven't already. I've been on a lighter weight kick as well. I owned a 650GC and a 550GT, and they were certainly plush cars, but they were boats, and I've come to realize I'm still young enough that I want a car that handles really, really well. That's where the fun comes in, after all. The X4 M40i still lets you get some nice options, like stop & go cruise control (which inexplicably isn't offered on any full M models) and comfier seats (i really miss the adjustable thigh supports on my F80). The HUD is also outstanding - it's the single best option BMW offers. Don't get me started on the package silliness, although honestly I can't stand the headlight washers because they can't be independently controlled, but heated rear seats and steering wheel would be nice - my thinking is it's a marketing reason. If you fully option a '17 (or '16) X4 M40i, it will not go over $70k. They probably didn't want anyone to option the car to tip 70k. Who knows. It's silly. At least you can individually option heated front seats. I would not go without the ACC Stop & Go Cruise though. I will use that option far more than the options in the cold weather package. Fortunately I live in a wram climate so I won't miss that stuff, but in Chicago I'd be missing the heated steering wheel a lot. Last edited by TonySCV; 05-01-2016 at 10:37 AM.. |

I have both. The M40i is a very capable piece of equipment that handles just about any job you can throw at it with style and fantastic speed. But the M2 is a totally different animal. This may very well be the most fun I've had in a vehicle, and I've been blessed to have owned quite a few.
