Temperature sensor reading way off.

2011 x3 3.5i
The temperature readout on the dash has been reading 20 or 25 degrees too high. I assume the car gets this reading from the intake temperature and the probe is faulty. Now I have an "emission" light on the dash too. I'm guessing they are related since it's getting more O2 than it thinks. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm looking for a new code reader (my old peake reader does not work on this one), so I can't retrieve the code(s) yet.
Thanks

I doubt the outside temp reading is used for engine control.

It is absolutely used for engine control and you will get a check engine light if it fails or has an issue.
