Something like a Technical Service Bulletin I believe, this is a technical advisory of a fix to a know problem as identified by BMW.

So if BMW issues it, does it mean that they've identified the issue and fixed it already, or not yet?

It seems not! I've just spoken with the dealer. BMW have told them to get the car in a for day, try taping up the mirrors and various air vents. They are experimenting with my car. They have a 2nd X3 coming in with the same issue.

It goes in a week today.

They will be using our cars to issue the TSB then! I just called my dealer and told him what your service guy had told you and that I don't know if it is a TSB or not etc. He immediately invited my car back in, surprisingly because during the previous visit both he and the tech chief had insisted that all was normal. Apparently they have been notified that such an issue may exist, but it seems they don't have a fix yet. Service rep offered to open the triangle area and put a better insulation there, but I think they will figure out what and how after they open it. I am bringing it in on Friday.
I am thinking of having them tighten the front doors a bit as well, because it's been rainy these days and at lower speeds like 20 mph I can clearly hear my tires on wet as if my door isn't completely shut.

August TSB Updates

The AutoMD website has just added the August TSB updates to the X3 (F25) list. They seem to get them posted online within 1 to 2 months of BMW releasing them.

There does not seem to be a TSB for wind noise as of Aug. 1, however, some of the other issues make for interesting reading. There are (19) TSBs now listed for the (F25). The latest (NHTSA 10041408) is intriguing: "BMW: Changes have been made to the vehicle's display elements of the tire pressure monitor system."

You are right. I also log on to that website frequently regarding this issue, nothing relevant yet as TSB. When I called my dealer, I also asked him to check their PUMA database on this , I don't know if he did or not.
Sometimes even dealers have a hard time tracking the TSBs I guess, or they just don't feel like it. It happened to me with a Jeep dealer. They were not accepting that a bulletin existed about a transmission return filter replacement until I submitted the TSB number from automd.com .

Quick update on my wind and traffic noise issue: My dealer finally found the bulletin on their PUMA database , and ordered parts for insulating the side mirror triangle area. He said a different part number is given in the bulletin but he did not share it nor the TSB # with me. Anyway, parts are to be shipped from Germany, and will call me when they receive them.
So far good to hear that BMW has addressed this as an issue and is working on it. Hope this fix will help lessen the wind noise we are having and help improve cabin refinement. If not, my dealer says replacing door seals would follow , or further insulations to areas like B-Pillar that may be possible other bridges to the noise. This is the usual order to follow fixing such problems, he said . We'll see.

Mine was in yesterday. They fitted some foam insulation to the sides of the a/c radiator because BMW told them to not because the dealer thought it could be the cause. They added extra insulation in the mirror triangles. I've only driven the car a few hundred meters on the the motorway but I'm not convinced the wind noise has improved. I need to take a drive but today is very windy in the first place.

Where exactly do you mean by the sides of the a/c radiator?

OK. Thanks anyway. I will ask my dealer about it too when the parts arrive. Looking forward to reading your comment whenever you test drive your car after the fix . Hope it improved even some.

The wind noise and sound of other traffic is not fixed. I reckon it needs new door seals. Also I have a light rattle from the driver's door lock area and saggy leather on the passenger seat (see other thread).

Mine will be in next week . They had ordered some parts according to the TSB . I am not sure if it will just be the triangle or seals and additional areas too. On the other hand, I strongly suspect the B pillar as well nowadays. When I put my ear a bit close to the B pillar while driving , I can easily hear the wind sound. Haven't tried it in another car yet tough. Of course it may be the sound again coming from door or window, I don't know.

I had a Cadillac SRX rental last week during a trip in the States and paid attention to the wind noise all the time to compare as it is also an SUV with not small side mirrors either ( although in a way cleverer trianglish mirror design ). Fastest I could make was 80 mph on the Turnpike , and up to that speed SRX had definitely lower wind noise level in the cabin than my X3 and also more silent for traffic noise at cruising speeds.

I had read most of the posts there about wind noise issue before opening this thread here. Thanks for sharing the link anyway Clivem2 .
Generally the door seals were blamed on at that forum for the noise , but BMW's insulation TSB to the mirror areas opened a new page. Now I am starting to believe that it needs a combined solution including the mirror triangle area insulation , replacement of the door seals , realignment of the doors , and maybe even insulating inside the door panels and B pillars . However I am sure dealers would prefer going step by step, doing one item at a time and awaiting our satisfaction.

Mine's gone in today for 2 days for the dealer to try to fix the wind noise, renew the leather on one seat, and fix the door lock rattle.

I've suggested they look at the door seals.

Good luck, and keep us posted as always.

Mine has recently developed a creak from sunroof plus a rattle from the center speaker in the dash both of which I have read various other posters in the forum also have.

My door rattle they say has been fixed by using silicone cleaner on the door seals, it does seem to be a lot better but not perfect.

The wind noise.....they tested another customer's car, they said it's the same so I said they needed to fix that one too. They are going to bring their demo car to my house for me to try next. Their experience of the X3 isn't deep enough yet to know whether wind noise is normal. Hearing it "blustering" over the mirrors at 70 mph doesn't seem right to me.

Clive, my X3 has no unusual wind noise at well over 70MPH. (Oops, did I say that out loud?) I was in Germany. Yeah, that's it. I was in Germany. On the autobahn. Or maybe it was Montana, but it might have been West Texas too...

As I shared here before, I think complaints due to wind and traffic noise mostly come from owners outside of US . Is it because QC for export X3s is handled at a different division or by a different team at the factory, I don't know. I believe parts used for body/structure should be identical, only difference should be petrol vs.diesel engine related.

I am on the other hand pleased when I hear some other members saying they have no such issue as wind noise ,because it makes me think this is a problem for certain cars of production due to usage of improper parts or temporary faulty labor , and therefore can be fixed relatively easier.
