Hate it right now

Drove an hour away to a wedding and made it to about 2 exits from where we needed to before getting "car is hot"..." Engine is overheating " . We were raped by using the trooper's tow truck call in at $300. Only cash of course and had to drive away from where we were at to go to an ATM. Then because of some accident we were stuck for forever. Finally home and just venting about the next cost which will probably be the waterpump.

///Mposter, are you a 28i or a 35i? If it's the thermostat, the thermostat is a module, not just a simple $25 thermostat. You know what "module" means pricewise.

Its a 35i. I thought the pump and thermostat were one piece like the E90's. I'll find out soon. I'm still pissed this morning and kept waking up and rolling over thinking about how we were taken advantage of by the towing.

Yes, towing can be a scam.

T-stat and water pump appear to be two different units.

Just wanted to give an update on the water pump and thermostat pricing and labor. So the part number for it was:
11-51-7-632-426 coolant pump $533.05
11-53-7-586-784 thermostat $117.67
11-51-0-392-553 set of alum screws $8.86
82-14-1-467-704 coolant $24.98
Labor $715 for 5.50 hours.

Some other things replaced were the rear boost lid tailgate button
51-24-7-368-752 pushbutton $32.45
labor $ 260 for 2.00 hours

11-28-7-628-661 ribbed v belt $52.10
11-28-8-604-266 tensioner $138.00
labor $234 for 1.8 hours

And then the kicker was that after leaving and driving no more than a 1/2 mile away
I had a adaptive headlight malfunction.
63-11-7-356-250 control unit xenon $517
labor $ 416 for 3.20 hours

So its basically a new car now. I think I will be good for a while until the brakes are due. I think I may go ahead and just order the parts today and then post up the front DIY.

Does your dealer offer a BMW CCA discount on parts and/or labor? For the $48 a year that it costs it may take some of the sting out of any dealer work which you have done.

2011 x3 (35i)

Yeah I think they offer the same discount. My coworker has used it even when ordering parts from the parts counter. I think he saved 10% off parts.

Here is a blurry picture of the dash when it happened. It's all I have of it. On the right it has the light symbol with a curved left to right arrow . (<--->)

Please Ford, oh please bring out the new Bronco or import the new Ranger...

It's one thing to be reliable and expensive to fix; quite another to be totally unreliable and expensive to fix. Both my Jeeps and Fords went close too or over 100K miles with no major problems before they were sold. My wife's 535i with less than 50K, fuel pump and water pump replaced. Like you found out, with the water pump, total shut down of the car.

My wife's Acura RDX almost has 90,000 on it and it's had spark plugs ($100) and brakes ($380) and tires ($600) replaced this year. So almost 8 years of nothing but driving. And the only thing I get for $1000 from a BMW is a headlight module, lol.
I thought about trading in both BMWs for just one new one and after the $30-$40,000 price gap I would have , I slapped myself straight and called back to cancel my appointment for the 2015 m3 test drive and trade in.
For that money ($40,000) I could keep all three of my vehicles and buy another fully loaded Acura . Oh well.

It's very difficult when you own a vehicle (or anything for that matter) and expect it to be faultless, only to have issues crop up and spoil your dreams. This is when you ask yourself questions like "why did I buy this", "how much did I spend on this!" etc.....
I guess all these are normal human reactions and are generally fair comments. However I bet there are a lot of BMW owners out there that have had no issues with 100K plus miles on them and there are plenty of Ford owners out there that now detest Ford due to many issues (I for one like Ford cars, but the quality has a lot to be desired).
I've owned three BMW's (two of which went over the 50k mark and I am still driving one of those today), with the X3 doing just over the 20k mark and touch wood so far so good (apart from some leaves in the blower!).

I guess it's down to luck at the end of the day, like all these things.

I hope you get it sorted and enjoy the car as it's meant to be.

Completely agree with Pete. Had a Ford, which spent most of the time in the shop instead of driving, then went to an Audi with 70K with not a single problem, VW constant problems under 50K, Infinti constant problems under 35K, and now a BMW with no problems up until now at 50K miles.

So it really is the luck of the draw sometimes. Also question for OP is none of that covered under the BMW Warranty?

57,800 miles on the clock. I've read about water pumps failing at 60,000. They have seemed to engineered them to last just over the warranty period .

I've also have an Acura integra that was purchased with 180,000 and sold with 230,000 and it was perfect. Only spark plugs and tires. Then a 2000 accord with zero miles to 89,000 with brakes , tires, spark plugs. I did send it to the dealer for the timing belt right before I gave it to my mom. Not very much money spent on that car. But unfortunately it didn't last long when a fed ex truck caught the wires on a utility line and brought the pole down karate chopping it across the hood and windshield.
