dilemma, pre-ordred 2013 X3 28i or 2012 loaded X5 35d on the lot for less $$
I have been eagerly waiting for over a month and either tomorrow or Monday suppose to take delivery of my 2013 X3 that I ordered.
I ordred the following 2013 X3 28i (MSRP $50,095) Black Sapphire/Mojave/Fineline Cold Weather Convenience Premium Technology Sport Activity Sirius Radio 3yr/15K Lease deal (without all the specifics) $675/month. Drive off approx $3300 (I would put an extra $1000 cap reduction to lower the payment under $700/month). Only incentive is $1000 drive team USA rebate. I told my advisor I am anxious as am used to a 5-series with inline 6, multi-contour seats etc. He would have no problem selling my configured X3 and has the following in stock. 2012 X5 35d. Space Gray/Black with: Sport Activity pkg, premium pkg, tech pkg, 20" wheels, multi-contour seats, running boards and BMW Apps. $4500 eco credit rebate, $1000 drive team USA rebate, $1500 Loyalty incentive. Essentially over $7000 below invoice sale price with higher residual and same MF. Drive off (1st payment, dmv, doc etc..) approx $2100 (no additional cash from me) MSRP: $67,395 3yr 15K $625/month incl tax EEEEEK! Goin crazy (or at least my advisor thinks I am!) I know the 35d is a totally different beast, have driven and love the engine and the average MPG about the same. Thoughts, opinions? Will go over tomorrow and check out my ordred X3 regardless. |

That $4500 Eco-credit is very tempting but you should pick which one you prefer driving. Test drive 'em both back to back, then decide. I preferred driving the X3 35i to the X5 for what it's worth.

Difficult one. New X5 may be coming in 2013/-14 - so dealers may slowly be starting off-loading stock. Once heavy discounting/specials start - the new model release is fairly imminent. X3 may still have the odd 4 years going before LCI.

Interesting indeed. I preferred the smaller feel of the X3 over the larger X5, but the X5 sure is nice especially with that engine.
I guess it's down to size - do you want a bit smaller vehicle or a larger one? Drive both again, see which you would be more comfortable in for the long run. |

Thanks all. The $4500 eco credit is basically another way of saying "rebate" on the X5 35d, which BMW considers and "eco" friendly model, which it kinda is. It's so tempting as I want the somewhat smaller X3 but those damn multi-contour seats in my current car and that would be in the X5 are really the big deal. I am very tall and have some major back problems. And of course the fact that it's way more expensive vehicle for cheaper out of pocket and lower payment which will really help right now.

Same Issue
I just faced the same dilemma. Ended up choosing the X3 28i because it was more fun to drive. Pretty easy decision for me because my wife has a Touareg TDI (which is current at a body shop with $22,000 of work needed due to the evil attack by a deer on the interstate), so we felt we didn't need the bigger vehicle. By the way, we love having a diesel...you shouldn't be hesitant about that.
