Are Nav updates free?
Does BMW charge for Nav updates that come out every 6 months or so (map updates), or is this included in the first 4 years of maintence? Anyone know?

So updates are not mandatory, but can be done if chosen?

With BMW, nothing is free. Map updates are $199 typically. There is really no reason to update more than every couple years, unless you're in an area with a lot of new roads being built.

No problem. Oh, I forgot you're in the mitten.... pretty sure no new roads are being built!

Please correct me if I am wrong, the F25 has hard drive nav that is automatically updated. It gets its maps from the satellite, not from a DVD. There should not be any map update necessary, ever.
There are however, firmware updates, that repair bugs. From my past BMW experience, a firmware update takes a long time to install that the dealers are weary to do it. So, the key is, you need to complain about a problem that the firmware resolves and then bring them written proof of which firmware version you want them to install. |

The thing about software and firmware updates is that BMW stopped reimbursing dealers for doing them unless there is a service bulliten out for a problem and the customer reports that specific problem. And yes, it is still a painfull process and they hate doing them. If you have a relationship with the service department you can ask "what do I need to complain about to get the latest update?". Otherwise, this forum is a good place to learn what is available and what it fixes.

Maps are on the harddrive, sats are just used for location not giving your harddrive updates. But the twist is google lookups!
Harddrive navs still need updates for $200. I would never do it if you live in a built up area, no need for it. |

Yeah, I didn't think they'd give up the revenue on the updates. I've had my 2007 since April '07 and have never updated it. Was going to this year - if I hadn't decided on the X3 (glad I didn't blow the $200 first).
