So the 35d is now up 14hp and 30NM! Nice! One of those in the new F30 3 Series would be very welcome indeed!

PLEASE bring this to the US for 2012 models, I would take this in a heartbeat and drop consideration of the X3M or RR Evoque, this thing would be a MONSTER, performance the same/better than the 35i with fuel effeciency of the new i4 turbo!

I must go away and do many bad things! I'm so excited for this engine!! Power up hugely and emissions down! HOW DO THEY DO THAT?! Bavarian Magic Works!

This is one hell of a milestone for Diesel, BMW and very clever engineering.

Hmmmm. Stig sad...

Just ordered a 30d M Sport.
No talk of a 35d coming to Oz.
Especially so early in the model cycle.

Yeah I see this as US bound since we don't have a D yet and usually the US gets the largest one available!

It will be interesting to see what uses this engine, maybe just 3 series, unless the 5 series and up will utilize two diesels in the US which BMW has never done, 35D and 50D? Imagine the 50D in the X3,

We have the 30d and 40d here in the X5 range.
They account for most of the X5 sales.
(Diesel makes up over 50% of the BMW sales in Oz)

The 30d has 180kW / 540Nm and the
40d has 225kW / 600Nm

Interestingly, the X3 here is a 30d as the top of the line model, which is 190kW / 560 Nm.

I dont think there is any difference in the engine besides the tuning between all these cars.

Not surprisingly we have the same diesel engines for the UK you do in Oz for X5 and X3. I don't know whether the 4.0D is the twin turbo, I'm guessing it is. I see in the X5 it's 6.6s 0-62 vs 7.6s for the 3.0D. The 0-62 difference in the lighter X3 seems to be smaller (5.8 vs 6.2). How much they are playing with the figures for marketing reasons is open to question, these may not be the real-world differences.

The 40d is twin turbo but the one in the X3 35d is a newer engine.

That's cos SCR is needed for Tier2 Bin5 (i.e. 50 state legal). Notice that the 35d currently available in US makes abt 260-270hp whereas the equivalent EU spec makes 286hp.

Tier2 Bin5 is the US EPA emission standard that applies to all 50 states. In order to make a diesel car comply w/this standard, it needs either a NOx trap or a cat w/adblue injection. The same applies to EU6, u can find SCR in BMWs that have the Blue Performance option.

US stds doesn't distinguish between diesel or petrol cars (unlike the EU std), so diesel cars must meet this particular standard in order to be able to sell in all 50 states (California is the problem child, so to speak).

Any insight as to whether they'll offer the 20d or 35d in the US for 2012?

Don't count on a 20D, ever. Not in the US, BMW like other companies will only have 1-2 diesels for their entire fleet here because of the stuff mentioned earlier in this post. There will be a 35d, question is when and how much power will our version get.

If they bring the 35D to Australia I will upgrade our 30D. Unless of course X3M is released first.

I think I would just ask the guys at the service centre to flash my car with an X5 40d tune....

Difference in driving characteristics? How much more weight is there over the nose of the 35D vs. 35i? If the diesel's nose heavy it will be a pig when it comes to handling.
