BMW Launches BMW X3 Customer Video Portal: Consumers Can Watch Production of Their Custom-Made BMW X3

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 19, 2011… Starting on January 20, BMW customers will have unique access to the creation of their custom-made BMW X3 vehicles via an online video portal that will show them footage of their customized X3 being produced at the company’s plant in Spartanburg, SC.

“Customization is essential to the new BMW X3. With more than 10 million distinct configurations available, we wanted to get customers excited about the birth of their unique vehicle,” said Trudy Hardy, Manager, BMW Marketing Communications and Consumer Events, BMW of North America. “This production footage of the BMW X3 vehicles from our Spartanburg plant enhances the overall customer experience that is part of the BMW brand.”

Customers can view the footage by creating a My BMW account on bmwusa.com and entering their X3 order number or VIN. Using seven cameras in BMW’s South Carolina plant, BMW deliver X3 customers with video that tracks their vehicle through the various stages of final assembly. The video does not have an expiration date, giving consumers round-the-clock access to the assembly footage, and the video can also be downloaded and shared with interested friends and family members.

Available this month, the new BMW X3 builds on the success of its first generation counterpart, offering drivers increased space, functionality, efficiency and comfort. The first BMW X model to be equipped with electro-mechanical power steering as standard equipment, the vehicle also offers owners the option of Dynamic Driving Control and BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems.

It won't work for UK orders. You have to register and then add your car but it doesn't recognise the VIN or the production number. Have tried a few times to get status updates on my order but no joy

I didn't email them, no. Might be worthwhile to see what they say. I don't see that it would be difficult and don't know why it's US only. It's just a portal to the database that is used for all their cars in production and all people want is a status.

They probably passed on details to the people at bmw.co.uk about how to provide a web portal and bmw.co.uk did nothing with it.

Cool feature. If I choose to purchase the X3 this Spring, I'll definitely take advantage of it. I look forward to test driving both models in a month or two.

Thumbs up x3 cust video issues//launch 20th jan

Scenario 1: A customer “custom orders” an X3 that is already on the way to the dealership. The customer then signs up for a My BMW account and enters the production/order number or VIN (provided to the customer once the purchase is complete). Or, the customer can add their production/order number or VIN to an existing My BMW account. In this case, F2 status was already reached so the customer will receive an email the next day that the video is available. This would also work on cars on lot but after jan 2oth build , hope this helps..

Good luck with the customer video portal - great idea - but spare a thought for us that have ordered from the UK (and perhaps other non-US locations).

We have no Track Your BMW feature available for online status updates . No phone number to call to get the latest update of the production of your car. Your only option is to contact your dealer who is never at his desk when you call and rarely returns any calls or replies to any emails .

It would seem Joy is dependent on where you live!

I realize this is not as good as a # to call but what about the info I found on the UK site below:

Q. I am importing a BMW. How can I receive a confirmation of the build date of the vehicle?
A. Please write to:
BMW Customer Services
Ellesfield Avenue
Bracknell
Berkshire
RG12 8TA

Please quote the full chassis number of the vehicle (usually 17 digits) and your full address and daytime contact number. We will then be able to send you a letter confirming the build date.

Also-Customer Information Department- please contact us on: 0800 325 600. Maybe they could refer you to the proper #.

I found one more-If you wish to contact BMW Customer Services, please do so by:

Telephone: 0870 5050 160

The regional differences really are confusing. Here we get a dramatically limited set of choices in configuring the vehicles compared to what I've seen in Europe and the only way to make changes on the order is through the dealer. And now we get the tracking and, reportedly video, but y'all don't? Strange.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately BMW customer services deflect all order status enquiries back to your dealer. They may be able to give you a build date but the dealer usually provides this as well.

What is missing is all of the status updates you see on the Track My BMW website. E.g. I was told Week 3 production and then it seemed to go in a week earlier, which meant I couldn't make any more option changes. I only found out about two of the status updates by spending ages trying to get hold of the dealer, and now, my last status of "departed plant", which I again had to pester the dealer for, was given on 14 Jan but nothing since. No idea where it is at the moment.

It wouldn't be so bad if when it went into production the dealer could just send you a weekly email saying no change, or there's been a delay, or there is a new status update, but you get nothing, which is frustrating.

10 million distinct configurations, and none of them is a 6MT 3.5i?

*sigh*
