Why such a big difference in price
From 2012 to 2013 why the price jump of over a 1000 on the base price? Just b/c of the new engine ?

For the 35i, the same goes for the Driving Experience Control switch, among other small things I don't care to remember. There are fewer differences between a 2012 35i and a 2013 35i than between a 2012 28i and a 2013. |

Here North of the Border the 28i is increasing by $550 and the 35i by $500 but we aren't getting the standard power liftgate.
There is also the start/stop feature for '13. I don't know if the start/stop requires a better starter or battery. Additionally for 2013 is the eco pro which adjusts electrical demand. So the price increase is reasonable IMHO. |

Because car above a certain threshold are first and foremost social products and the manufacturers will milk it to what they see as the maximum.

If you don't get the M-Sport I think the Sport Activity Package is a definite must have alternative but once again it depends on what you're willing to spend. This thread helped me figure out if I really wanted to pursue the M-Sport prior to going through the trouble of seeing one IRL: http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=522823

I think it also depends on the order package you interested in. For me, I got a quote for a 2012 before I decided to go with the 2013. While the base price might have gone up, the cheaper option packages made up for the difference.
In fact, with the same packages the 2013 ended up being slightly cheaper overall, not by much, but considering I am getting the auto start/stop, eco pro drive, and other bits new to the 2013 I think its definitely a fair price |
