According to the story, it was BMW, obviously an X3. Travelling at a high rate of speed and hit several vehicles before hitting the guardrail. One dead in the Darwin pool.

Maybe, could be an x1? It is in Canada. Definitely an x-series.

Edit: Nevermind.

+1 Hope he didn't injur anyone else, but no loss to society that's for sure. As for the X3... eh, they'll make more.

Only curious to know how fast was fast when he suddenly came back to 0.

Reason I ask is how many times has a BMW blown up in an accident? You'll see the odd one getting sheared off etc but I can't remember the last time one went kablooey (battery safety terminals, fuel cuts, and all)

Loss of life is always unfortunate but from the initial description of traveling at a high rate of speed, the outcome is of no surprise. He gambled and paid the ultimate price but glad to hear he didn't take any innocents along with him. Seeing the 308 wheels in the picture, looks like the decease had a 28i (Canadian X3s have their wheel styles opposite of US X3s).

"the sport utility vehicle was in flames when it became airborne in the middle of the road."

You sure don't hear that everyday.

Oh plus he should have gotten a diesel so he could have avoided the

The report said it was an X3, very concerning that the X3 burned the way it did.

I suspect if you drive any vehicle that way it will catch fire when you hit something substantial and immovable. The X3 is not a Ford Pinto.

I would spend it a bit more time worrying about Greece and Italy defaulting on their debt than X3's catching fire when they hit something at high speed.

It's not quite appropriate for the topic but....

US better keep it together this time around...we'll send you Flaherty for a small fee

It is a F25 X3.
Still a bit worrying that a car can burst into flames like this on a collision (skidding off the median in the center - that's when the fire started, before it hit the guard rail and stopped on the right).

If not the fire, the collision may be survivable.

But we are not talking about a catastrophic head on collision here.
The car just rode onto the median and skidded off it. And it already caught fire before it hit the guard rail.

I have to disagree.
While the debt crisis can have serious financial consequence, it won't kill anyone directly. OTOH, accidents can happen to ANY driver - all it takes is an idiot driver or a drunk driver next to you.

The fire could be a concern but I would wait until another report of an X3 catching fire before being too worried about it. It sounds like the initial impact may have ruptured the fuel tank and it must have hit something hard and fast to fly through the air as described

Did the car not hit a few cars before it hit the median? I thought I read that in the initial reports. Still though, a bit concerning.

I think the speed was the largest factor in all of this Nosnoop. There's safety mechanisms in place for head on collisions and the X3 rates quite well in crash test ratings but the X3 driver didn't simply ride up onto a median, he struck the center median, careened over and struck the right median then flew into the air & rolled over before stopping. All I'm saying is the driver was going fast enough to fly into the air, fast enough to the point where witnesses said that his car was on fire before it was even in the air so in all honesty I doubt any other car would fare better nor do car manufactures take such extreme situations into consideration when designing their cars.

I don't want to sound insensitive but at this point there's not much to do, people just need to learn from this event and be more cautious in the future.

At the moment no one knows the identity of the man nor if he was intoxicated or any medical conditions that could have caused this.

He was doing 150km in a 90km zone, zipping in and out of cars on a very busy stretch of road. I drive through here all the time with my family and luckily he only killed himself.

Not much more information on the cause of this crash, but according to ctvtoronto.ca -

"Toronto police say the driver of an SUV that crashed at high speed, rolled and then burned on the Don Valley Parkway last week was a 75-year-old man."

There seems to be some speculation about the medical condition of the poor driver and not the vehicle.

Seems likely that a medical condition could be involved in that accident as it is not typical of 75 year old normal behavior. I doubt very much that it was anything related to the vehicle.
