Tapping at Idle on X30d 2013.
Hi,
I have seen a number of post regarding tapping on X3 engines at idle but most seem to be concerned with pertol and not diesel (N57) versions. Anyway, I have noticed recently that there is a tapping coming from the engine at idle when cold. It is still there when warm but not as noticeable. I do not remember it being there when I bought it 6months ago. I took it back to the dealership and the service manager said it sounded totally normal, however, I am still a bit sceptical. I have had a good look around the engine and taken the engine covers off to get better access. It does appear that it could be the front injector. It certainly seems louder than the others. What I really want to do is to compare it next to another 30d but I havent been able to do this yet. So my question - is it possible to disconnect the injectors, electrically, whilst it is running to see if the noise stops. This would allow me to confirm it is the injector. My worry is that it will throw up an error which will put it into reduced power or limp home meaning I will have to go to the dealer to get it reset. The engine sounds lovely apart from, what I think, is this slightly loud tapping, and I would like to get it resolved if I can. Thanks Mark |

Here is a link to a sound file of the car idling. What do you think?

Yes my X30d sounds just like that. In fact my 2010 Porsche Cayman S has the same metallic tapping sound when idling... rather weird but normal.

Thanks for confirming that. For me it seems to be coming from the front injector, which made me think it was at fault but if yours does it also then it becomes more unlikely it is a problem. It is strange.
