X3 M Sport Staggered Tire Size?

Hello All,

Did a quick search and did not find the answer to this....

Is anyone running this staggered tire combination?
Front 255-45-19, 8.5" width rim
Rear 285-40-19, 9.5" width rim

Does everything clear, no rubbing?

I would like to try this set-up using Michelin Pilot Super Sports

I was running a very similar setup. I'm on 20 x 8.5" wheels, and I run a square setup, 255/40-20. My wheels are ET 33, and everything clears just fine. I spaced the back out 15mm, would like to push the fronts out a bit too but haven't gotten around to it.

I had a set of Michelin PSS, but recently swapped them out, have the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on there now.

So how do you like the handling with the Pilot Sport 4S square set-up?
Why did you choose square vs staggered?
Did you notice a difference between the PSS vs Sport 4S?

Our X3 has the M Sport package but was ordered with the square set up and all season tires.

I have only ever used a square set up on our BMW's for winter tire applications.

In the US, The M sport X3 comes with a square setup, unless you out for the OEM 20" upgrade, then you get the staggered fitment. Personally I think the OEM size for the 20" staggered setup looks funny. The rears are 275/35-20 and it's just too little sidewall in the back for my liking.

I chose square setup simply for the ability to rotate tires, which also doubles the warranty mileage on Michelin.

For instance, the PSS or the PS4S are both 30k mile tires. With a square setup, I can get a warranty credit for a portion of the cost based on the remainder of those 30k miles. This time, when getting new tires, I had 22k miles on them, so I got a warranty discount of about $75/tire. Had I chose a staggered setup, that mileage warranty would've been limited to 15k miles.

Seeing as the X3 comes stock on a square setup (in the US anyway) I'm fine with keeping it that way.

As for the tires, I loved the PSS, and the PS4S are even better. I can corner much more confidently than the stock tires and I often like to dive in to corners much harder than I would otherwise feel comfortable doing. I have the PS4S on my M3 as well and they're incredible tire.

I agree the PSS where a great tire I had them on 5 different cars over the years. The Pilot 4S is a nice improvement! I had them on my M235 and will be putting them on my 435 as soon the factory P-Zero's are toast.

A staggered setup will cause some massive understeer if you hit the twistys hard. Stick with square.

Why? In the UK a staggered setup is very common on 19" wheels on M Sport models on 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre diesels. We do not have petrol (gas) F25 vehicles in the UK.

Actually I prefer staggered I find the handling is better. I have run cars and SUV's with with Factory staggered set-ups and I have never experienced massive understeer.

I just picked up my 2016 (replacing my wrecked 2014), the 2014 had the M Sport 19" square (245 all around), where the new one has the M Sport 19" staggered (245/45/19 up front, 275/40/19 in the rear), with the Pirelli summer tires.

I would say it feels a lot more stable, grip is great, but I haven't really had a chance to drive them much, and last I drove my '14, it was on 19" square winter tires, so it's not a fair comparison.

I bought a CPO 2015 a few weeks ago and it too had the staggered setup (was an M-Sport car). It's got the Potenzas but they gave me a set of P-Zero's as well. I haven't decided if I want to sell them or just get a 2nd set of wheels and swap every 6 months.
