X3 Vs Garage Door !

It was one of those, how the hel- did that happen ! ! !
Wife goes to get the mail and always goes thru the garage roll up door.
Okay, but a clank, scrap and very loud thump later. All four width panels (18 ft wide door) are twisted bad,
its pulled out of overhead track on left, torsion bar cable is unwound on right and door is much lower there.
Vertical & overhead track on left is bent along with a few panel hinges. Lucky the opener (3/4hp) and its track
are not damaged.... pulled the disconnect, and attempted to move the door to close. Down on one side (barely)
but 10" up on the other . . . . . pretty much "toast" ! ! ! !
And the lower tail gate edge on the X3 "has" looked better.

So the final analysis was. We keep our keys in a small wicker basket in the kitchen, along with some phone
charging cables & plug ins. One phone beeped last night, feed me, and she got the cable and plugged it into
the wall outlet. During the hand grab in the basket the "tail gate" button must have gotten pushed. So thru
3 walls, a steel door and apx 35 ft., the signal weaved it way to the receiver and the tail gate opened .
It stopped when it hit the door and there rested . . . . TILL the garage door ascended on her command, grabbed
the tail gate edge, became a pivot point to hold, and pushed the door out till it popped out of the track.
Todays estimated ! (drum roll please )
Garage door "replacement" ... $1500 garage door (lucked out after actual repair $$500 )
BMW Lift Gate repair............. $1250 in shop 3 days.

Then i thought doesn't the opener release if too much resistance torque is applied . . . ya think !
So i called the opener MFG, and it does, BUT ONLY GOING DOWN ! ! !
Going up its full speed ahead . . .crunch !!

So my next question to all . . . . . is there a FOB cover to prevent the next $2800 stray signal ??
This Can happen to anyone ! . . . .(without a fob cover)... oh well.

This is also happens on other BMWs not just the X3. It happened to me several times with my F31 320d Sport several times years ago. Many have had similar experiences where they have the key fob in their pocket and bent down and by accident have pressed the button that opens the boot (trunk) lid.

You can code the tailgate so it'll only open via the remote if you unlock the car first

Has happened to us twice. Pretty sure the button pushed while in my pocket somehow. Luckily the damage to the tailgate is minor and the garage door none, but who knows about next time.

Now that is info worth while !
Will need to learn the coding system and buy an access device.
OR can dealer fool with such a change? It'll be there for gate repair

There are a number of people on the coding forums who can do this for you remotely (for a few beer tokens) - I think that Almaretto may do this, probably worth sending him a PM as, if he doesn't do it himself, he can probably point you at someone who does.

They should just need to set

CAFD_0000000F.caf.005_025_056 (CAS_04)

CAS_04
--> CLM 3002
----> HK_GESPERRT_IN_GESICHERT = aktiv , Werte=01

Buy a leather key case to prevent button presses. Happened to me once while at a coffee shop. Came back hours later to see every window and roof rolled open

only have 18 inches of clearance between rear of car and
garage door when down. So limiting travel would be okay to
save a dent, but defeat the full open to load convenience.

AND bought a couple fob covers to aid in avoidance of a repeat.
Bought at the BMW dealer, and as i'm speaking to the parts mgr., she states she is putting together a
number of parts for the body shop this moment . . . . for the same reason on another customer!
I'm lucky in that my garage door was somewhat flexible, the other x3 tangled with an industrial
truck size steel roll up. She is sending over a new rear door ! . . . . ouch !

I think to avoid these incidents, there should be some kind of sensor at rear glass that detects obstacle and stops tailgate to open all the way.

I am with you on this. I am quite surprised BMW have not sorted this out.

They may well have sorted it out in a thriving spare parts trade. Meanwhile there any number of unhappy customers. I am a tailgate/garage door victim as well as a victim of the unintended windows down/sunroof open during a rain shower. Arrrrgh!!
