Question Observed fuel efficiency on the N20 / xDrive28i?

I'm not asking for the "stated" fuel efficiency. Just for what people are actually experiencing. My 2013 xDrive is averaging about 14 mpg in the city+highway (combined) during the 1st week I've had it. It's still on it's 1st tank of fuel (right from dealership) but it's substantially below the advertised 21/28.

Driving mode: Mixture of sports, normal and "eco pro" (?). I'd say I've spent most miles in the "eco pro" setting.

Driving style: Pretty normal. I've stepped on it during a couple of overtakes/passings but I've also been letting it coast for many more miles.

Environment temperatures: I'm in southern California, so it's 70-90 F for the most part.

Anyway, the fuel efficiency numbers don't seem normal. So, any suggestions?

Cheers
Sid

Well I have had my 2013 x3 28i since Aug 14 and I just leave it in Comfort with the occasional Sport but for the most part I'm getting 21 mpg. I did about 1500 miles on the highway and about 400 miles in town. I was definitely getting about 28 on the highway sometimes even more but I drive really aggressively in town and I get maybe 15 mpg or less. It should increase after you add the miles on it.

I've had my X3 for three weeks now. This past weekend on the highway, at an average speed of roughly 100 km/hr, I got 7.6 l/100km (on a journey of 200 km) which is roughly 37 miles per imperial gallon or just over 30 miles per American gallon. It was mostly on cruise the whole time, with the default performance settings.

Yes 2013 X3 i28, running with default performance tuning settings.

I should mention that this is what the trip computer reported to me. I've not verified what it is reporting by physically measuring the amount of gas used.

One trip I plan to do that, just to see if the trip computer and the gas station pump agree how much gas was consumed!

I haven't checked the computer, but I'm averaging about 22.5 / 23 MPG in mixed driving according to the display. '13 35i

I've had my 2013 28i since May 10th and have almost 6000 miles already. I commute. The computer reports my all time MPG to be 24.0. On my morning commute which is probably 70/30 highway/city it ranges from 26.8 to as much as 29.6.

Gotta say, I'm surprised. I was thinking the N20 would get much better MPG than the N55 but based on everyone's results the numbers look to be right inline with what we get in our N55 equipped X3. I wonder if it's just that the N20 has to work a bit harder? Maybe there aren't many N20s that are really broken in? I know our motor livened up a bit and efficiency increased after 10k miles.

Just wanted to report my fuel economy on a 300 mile round trip on 35i was 26 mpg. Pretty impressive as I had cruise set to 75 mph most of the time.

Maybe your gauge isn't right. 14mpg is more of a big boy number - like Chevy Tahoe.

Sorry for the stupid question, but did you reset your MPG gauge? You really, even with spirited driving (unless you're literally sitting in traffic) shouldn't get less than 17/18mpg with those engines.

We have come to a similar conclusion the other side other pond with diesel 2.0 & 3.0 X3's, very little in it. We seem to get high 30's if pressing on and high 40's if taking it easy.

I've had a couple of gental runs over 50mpg in my 3.0D but overall I'm getting 42. I like to keep checking the speed limiter is still working at 130mph

Just finished a 1500 mile road trip in my 28i. Got 30.8 (US) MPG total, almost all highway miles on flat ground averaging 72 mph.

on a short (about 25 mi) drive this past weekend from Northbrook IL to Chicago down US 94 (comfort, AC on etc.), resetting the trip computer at the begggining of the drive gave us 35 US MPG at an average speed of about 65 MPH driving . clearly this is only a short drive and hwy only, but for a non-diesel engine to put out 35 mpg at 65mph while crusing on the hwy is amazing in my book and makes the x3 with the N20 a great hwy cruiser.

we got close to 30 mpg on the drive from the factory in SC to Chicago, and I think our average speed over 800 mi was faster (more like 70 mph, but we went as fast as 90 mph in spurts)

Very intriguing. Someone should study your theory to see if it's valid.

I am getting a reported 23.9 MPG on my N20 / xDrive28i with about 5,000 miles now. Living in Southern California I am probably doing 65% street style stop and go driving and 45% freeway speeds. I am a lightfoot. The MPG is nothing to brag or complain about (close enough to advertised rates). I am a bit disappointed, in that that with my heavy use of eco-pro I was hoping to get around 26MPG.

I've have about 6000 miles on my 28i and average about 23.5mpg with my typical driving, which is 50/50 city/highway. I have done a couple of long trips where on one I got 26.5mpg and the other a bit over 28mpg. For he most part I keep it in comfort.
