My dealer says that the F25 will store up to (4) user profiles with a separate remote key for each. The list price for a F25 key is about $350 and the dealer's labor fee programming the key and the car for each extra key usually costs an additional $100 to $150, so figure about $500 per key. The battery is included!

I have 4 fobs. Only two work with comfort access. My dealer programed the keys, for free. He did not need any hardware. He held the new fob near the key icon on the steering column and held down one of the buttons on the fob. There I some kind of "secret" sequence to programing the fob. He would not tell me what it was.

Not surprised if some dealers charge $100 a pop. Lucrative indeed

Yes. That's what the "programming" process enables. Presumably, that's another reason why the "programming" procedure is kept confidential by the dealer. (to keep someone from reprogramming their key for someone else's car.
The (F25) "remote key" is really rather sophisticated. It contains a digitally coded RF transmitter that unlocks the car and overrides the anti-theft system and tells the car which driver is present. It also contains a receiver and digital memory that is updated every time you unlock the doors. The stored memory can be read out at the BMW dealership and includes about (12) pieces of info about the car. The last time I looked over the SA's shoulder when he plugged my key into his terminal it showed all error codes that had been recorded in the car, total mileage, mileage to next service, mileage since last oil change and (i believe) the number of cold starts. You can think of the "remote key" as a sort of "Big Brother" watching over you and tatteling to the BMW SA about how you're treating the car. Big Brother is Watching! |
