Takata airbag

Today I received a notice about a settlement in a class action suit against BMW over Takata airbags. I really don't care about the lawsuit, but there was a link where you can check "if your vehicle is included as a Subject Vehicle". When I entered by VIN, it said "This Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has been matched with an eligible Subject Vehicle."

I thought I had read that my 2013 X3 did not have a Takata airbag. Was I wrong? If so did I miss a recall notice?

Thanks,

-Bruce

FYI: the website is www.autoairbagsettlement.com

I received the same mailer, and my VIN also comes up as eligible. However, I can find nothing that lists an X3 manufactured after 2010 as being part of the recall, either on a BMW website or the NHTSA website.

Takata is currently investigating Takata airbags in the 2011 model year F25 X3s to see if they are indeed defective like the others. If that proves true, there will be a recall on F25s as well. Not sure what model year F25s will be affected. They are testing 2011s because they are the oldest and these airbags are more susceptible to failure the older the car gets. It affects the driver and passenger airbag.

For the record my 2011 M3 has an affected airbag and I've had the notice for over a year. Still waiting for another letter that parts are ready. I'm sure our X3s are affected as well. There are so many makes/models that have been affected at this point, I bet there are more bad airbags on the road than good ones. I'm kind of over it...

My 2011 comes up as "eligible" in the link posted above, however, no recalls shown on BMW or NHTSA website. I guess we will find out (probably in a few years if they'll move at the same e46 airbag recall speed...).

Funny you mention that... I just the other day got a letter to bring in my first E46... A car that was totaled in an accident in 2012... I figured they would've received notice back then that the car was not in need of an airbag...

And since we're on the topic, the drivers curtain and driver's door airbags deployed, neither of which exploded...

I just received that notification as well. I went on line and checked my VIN and it said my car was affected. I had occasion to go to my dealership for another matter yesterday so I checked with the Service Advisor. He checked in the BMW system and he said my car was not affected, He explained that these notices are sent out by a third party (law firm) that they just blanket the area of anyone who has a matching vehicle. Like the old saying "throw the crap against the wall and see what sticks." Check with your dealerships to see if it actually affects your vehicle.
