Does this cause a problem opening and closing?
I just test drove one and it was unbearable!!!

Thats a good question, will the sunroof still fully close and seal, will it increase wind noise on the highway?

In the link it looks like the pads are placed to stop the plastic from contacting the rear end of the forward piece of glass, not the forward end of the rear piece of glass.

I have a 2011 X3 and have had this issue since the beginning. Definitely gets worse with colder temps (I'm in Buffalo, NY). I have mentioned this to the dealer probably 5 or more times when I have it in for service and their remedy is to try the felt tape solution. My service adviser even said BMW put out a bulletin about it to service advisers. Well that solution worked for a couple days but the clicking noise always comes back. I have 37,000 miles on the X3 now, and I am just getting fed up. Next time it is in for service I want to demand some kind of mechanical fix because the felt tape solution is just not working. I agree it is from the black center piece between the two glass plates. A thicker piece of foam to keep the the plastic piece from vibrating might work. It just annoys me that I payed 40k for a vehicle which just seems cheaply constructed.

I tried the foam solution and it work. Got 1/2 inch thick foam from craft store. Cut 3 pieces 6 in by 2 inches. Placed the pieces between the sunroof glass and the plastic casette piece. This is easiest to do with the roof in the tilted vent position. Creak completly gone and it only cost $2. Wish I had tried this sooner.

I haven't gotten around to installing the felt strips yet... I just close the sun shade to reduce the noise. I'll get around to it soon... it is suppose to warm up to -6 on Thursday and I'm sure the 3M stuff works at that temperature.

after my last visit to shop because of sunroof noise and crease mark on the air bag of steering wheel above the emblem i refuse to do survey. i was contacted by service director assistant and she had all of the service reports in hand, discuss the issue that tape shouldnt be "repair fix" on 45k vehicle. she will discuss the issue with shop foreman. Now i have an appt for Feb 7.

crease mark above emblem is normal on airbag steering wheel so they say.

roof rattle/creak

Joyce- Did dealer get your roof creak resolved. I am in Chicago too and have had my X3 in 3 times and every time I pull out of lot, creaks the same. Wondering where you had it serviced. Thanks!

Dealer says to bring it in and that they likely know how to fix it...will report back when I know more. This forum has been very helpful!

I found a simple fix for the rattling moonroof and posted pictures here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...7&postcount=40

Still Creaking

I started this thread at 5000 miles, I'm now at 18000 and it's still creaking.
It has been looked at 4 times and it still makes a noise when cold. Wow, German engineering at its best. Very disappointed with my first BMW, somehow, I expected more. I guess all the advertising bullshit really does pay off !

Halfalife I've just had my moonroof fixed a week ago. Had that creaking problem right from the beginning when I bought the car. There is 26000 km put on it now. That thing drove me nuts. The noise was coming from the back of the moonroof, I think it was the rights side. Dealer was looking at it three times. Finally I told them that I can't deal with it any more, so they took the roofliner of and pinpointed the problem. It was adjusters in moonroof. First they readjusted them and took the car for a ride and then they noticed that the adjusters came loose again so they changed all of them and readjusted them again and that was the fix. It was a week ago and so far it is fine. I can't believe how nice and quiet the car is right now. I hope that will help you with your problem.

Honestly, I didn't get around to it. I still have the issue. Plan was/is to take it to Perillo where they say it's a routine fix.

My car has been back in for 3 days. There is now an official fix for the problem I had. They now have a lubricant for the sunroof to stop the creaking. Mine hasn't made a peep since, let's hope it continues.

I just got ours fixed as well, got it back today. It's the permanent fix supposedly, no felt. I'll post the pic of the service invoice later. So far so good, not a creak whatsoever.

That's great news.

Even though it's warmed up my car is still creaking. I guess I'll have to get my car 'fixed' next service.

Mine has been twice to get 'fixed' with tape, and it's creaking more than ever, even with the warmer weather...
I'd be interested for the service invoice, if it has a 'tag' I could pass on to my dealer...

Have a 2011 X3 and have had the issue since Day 1. Have brought it in twice for repair and no help.
Lease is about to end so am happy to return this one and move on to the 2014 or 2015 X3.
Hope the issue is fixed in the new model

Does anyone have info on this "official fix"? I'm going in for service soon, would love to be able to point them to the solution.

Thanks.
