Car delivered - first impressions

Took delivery of my X3 last week after 6 months of waiting..

Coming from a 330 ci E92 and a couple of Audis, my expectations were quite high. After all, the price for my car was 50K euro..

After two days, the speakers quit..No sound whatsoever, but the head unit seemed to work (cd, IPOD, radio playing in the head unit)
I have the Premium Hifi system (Dirac).

Took the car in to the dealer and they went through the fuses (11 fuses only for the sound system btw) but they were all OK. So the car is now scheduled for repair on monday. Now I dread the fact that they need to go through the electrical wiring and tear down the interior..Oh and by the way; I wasn't playing on a very high volume when it quit on me..

Also there is a very annoying rattle sound coming from the driver side window when driving over bumps etc..Sounds like the window is rattling against the door somehow..Drives me crazy since my last BMW seemed to be carved out of stone..it was very tight with no squeaks at all..

Looking past the above issues, the X3 drives very good, its very comfortable and good looking. But I wonder if the quality control and the build quality is as good as german made BMW's..it doesn't seem so in my case unfortunately..

Hope the sound system and the door rattle are quick fixes, would hate to have these kinds of problems with a brand new car..

I guess not, just saw a photo of regular carpet floor mats. It sure seems like a lot of new owners already have the rubber floor mats though.

I got my dealer to throw in the all weather mats for free. Just tell your dealer you would like them to include them for free before you take delivery. Most will do it.

Rubber mats ($66) are cheaper than carpet mats ($139).
So, I suggest you ask the dealer to throw in the carpet mats and then pay for the rubber mats if you need two sets!

Update on my X3 problems:

The X3 have been at the dealers for two whole days.
After tearing down the whole car (sigh) including the drivers door, they think that the sound systems amplifier is broken and that have to be ordered from Germany, its not a standard stock spare part. So the car needs to be brought in again in two weeks time, which means two weeks with no radio, handsfree, pdc etc.

They also tore down the drivers door to find the reason for the rattling, but that didn't seem to help..the rattle when going over potholes etc is still there..damn annoying on a brand new car..so two days without a car just for finding faults but no problem solving at all..

Needless to say, I'm disappointed so far with my X3..the quality does not seem up to par with German made BMW models in my opinion..If this continues, its back to Audi..

Sorry for your issues with the X3.

"The grass is always greener..., etc."
I went from a beautiful looking A4-2.8 to a X3 because of chronic Audi suspension rattles and unreliable electronics. The (100% German made) A4 rattles and clunks were eventually fixed by the complete replacement of all the lower control arms and all bushings under a recall. The electronics problems continued until we sold the car.

Sorry to hear about the ongoing issues. A lot of this stuff is down to dealerships not having people qualified enough to find the fault. The rattle in the door shouldn't be hard surely. Sounds like they're just guessing badly.

I have no problems with the build quality on my X3 and think it's superior to many other cars I've owned. There will always be some bad apples so I think you just got unlucky.

Oh, and if it's the amp that is fault, DIRAC are a Swedish company!

Hi Lotus,

I owned 3 Audi A4 previously and all of them had bad bushings, which got replaced several times on all cars...that was the reason I abandoned Audi for some time..True the grass is always greener, but my E92 was awesome in build quality, amazingly solid at all times..I even had 19inch 35 profile wheels and M-sport suspension and not a single bad sound coming from the interior when hitting potholes..And trust me, we have got very bad roads with potholes in Sweden due to the harsh winters and this was never a problem..

Anyways, hope I'm not flaming the X3 too much..that is not my intention..
Im more interested in if anyone else have had similar problems and what their experience/remedy was..

Btw Lotus, really enjoy reading your helpful/intelligent posts on this forum
