X3 2016 Needs New Engine
Our X3 suddenly started stuttering. Took to dealer, said no compression in one cylinder, engine needs to be replaced. They're not sure of the cause. Maybe a problem with the rings? Definitely mechanical though. Car has always been serviced by BMW, no oil or overheating problems. Also suggested could have been manufacturing issue.
The X3 has under 60,000 miles, less than 6 months out of warranty. Was purchased as a CPO from BMW dealer. I'm astonished that we have this problem, out of nowhere, on a car with so few miles. BMW will help with some of the cost, not all. Trying to decide if we should buy new engine, and sink thousands into this car, or trade it in. Anyone else dealing with this type of issue? Any advice? |

That sucks. How much is the dealer telling you the final cost to you after they "help" you? How long a warranty on the new engine? How much would they give you as a trade in? Is it a 28i or 35i? Is anything else wrong or lacking in the X3? If the projected cost plus the trade in value is close to a newer X3, then I would seriously consider it.

I believe warranty would be 2 years/unlimited miles. It's a 28i. Nothing else wrong with it, as far as I know. The car is fully paid off. Could maybe get $14k as trade in... Last edited by jackfox; 04-15-2021 at 09:30 AM.. Reason: Forgot something |

Sorry to read this, those darn 4 banger turbo N20/26 motors are problematic, poor design. Good luck with repairs/replacement engine!

Are you familiar with the timing chain lawsuit? Could this car be effected by that as well? Model year is 2016 but what is production year?
Cars suffering from the issue would maybe produce a loud whining noise from the engine before failure, but will fail without warning, so it seems like the same results here. Only way to tell is to check the chain guides. |

Is this a 4 cylinder or 6? If it is a 4 and it is a timing chain guide issue, you should be covered.
