Do you have the Technology Package? If so, It's probably one of the cameras for the "Rear View Camera with Top View" option.

If it's the inside mirror, it's the light for the alarm. Blinks red when armed.

there may be a red button that changes the angle of the rearview mirror if you rotate it, so you don't get other drivers headlights in your face at night (if you don't have the auto-dimming rearview mirror)

Can it be alarm? Its a big red round thing right? If its an alarm, is this standard on the 35i? Last month some jerk stole/ripped off the rear view camera from my car, damn Infiniti didnt even make an alarming sound

Question: If sumone try to steal the rear view camera from the new X3, will the alarm sound?

On the 35i alarm system the armed indicator is a flashing red LED in the round red knob under the inside rear view mirror. Turning the same knob controls the mirror "anti-glare" setting on non-auto dimming mirrors.

The alarm is not wired to detect the theft of your rear view camera, but if the vehicle is moved or tilted, a door is opened or something moves inside the car, it will trigger.

Alarm is standard on the 35i in USA. This is the car I have, I've not done the research for others.

Also, page 43 of the manual shows the rear view mirror and the "white circular looking thing underneath"

Not in Australia on the 20d, it is a $1000 option.

I love my car but non dimming mirror annoys the heck out of me. The rear view ones has a sensor to dim the mirrors when a car shines on the them but the two side mirrors do not.

I guess I have to drive fast and out of view then

When you lock the door from the out side, it activates the alarm. There is nothing else to do. I should have said the standard feature of the alarm is included on all 2011 x3's in the US.
