Overheat and drivetrain malfunction

Hi, everyone

I own 2012 x3 xdrive and only drove 3800 miles. I was driving in a city last week and the engine started to overheat. A warning sing came up and recommended me to stop. After I stopped my vehicle, it also gave me a drivetrain malfunction warning. Anybody know what drivetrain malfunction is and what might caused overheat.

thanks.

Take it back to the dealer for check out. Could be a lot of different things.

yea could be anything, we dont know enough to really tell, just wait for the dealer to call. did you try restarting the car? could just be the electronics making a mistake which happened to me before, i restarted the car and everything was normal.

I can understand your frustration. My X3 has been back for warranty over and over again. It has been a gearbox or torque converter that intermittently does not lock up that has had me taking the car back.
They replaced the torque converter. Not fixed.
They updated the software, still not fixed.
Then the drivers side window jammed up. Back for that too.

But what you are describing could be similar to my gearbox problem. If the torque converter does not lock up, all the force from the engine is being transferred through fluid which will eventually create a lot of heat or overheating.

At present if my car’s transmission does not lock up I have to pull over to the side of the road and switch everything off. Then restart and the car works OK. I have never before driven a car where you have to treat it like a Windows operating system to make it work properly. Maybe your transmission problem is similar to mine.
