Seat and mirror position memory

Car: X4 M40i with Comfort Access (standard).

Situation: I am 6'1 and driver's seat is adjusted accordingly. I use one particular key and I have one of the Driver Profiles assigned to me/that key.
I come home, park the beast in the garage, but I do not lock it (in my own garage). Car goes to sleep.

The next day, my wife needs to use the car. She is considerbly shorter than I and obviously needs seat to be adjusted. She enters the car with her own key - but the seat does not move. She cannot reach brake pedal to start the car.
If I read the manual correctly, the seat/mirror memory ONLY works when the car is unlocked. Since we don't lock/unlock the car in our own garage, Comfort Access and Driver Profiles is useless in this situation.

Very disappointed that the car isn't smart enough to sense that a different key is approaching and initiate an adjustment of the seat accordingly.

Please tell me I am missing something here (car is a week old, so still trying to figure out the beast).

Local BMW Genius has confirmed that it is the actual unlocking of the car that triggers the seat adjustment.

Very disappointed in BMW's engineering in this area. Pathetic, actually.

Strange. I haven't had this issue when my wife and I swap vehicles. Is the idrive setting correct - I.e. remember last seating position? Just a thought.
