Shipping my X3
I might need to ship my X3 from Salt Lake area to the Boston area in the next few weeks. Does anybody know of a good transport company that is reliable and will not damage my car. It's going to have a lot of stuff inside too.

I've done 3 transports now, used Montway for all of them, great results with all of them. Shipped my M3 Seattle to Florida for $900, my X5M Florida to Minnesota (buyer paid for it), and my X3 North Carolina to Florida for $650.

I did this many years ago, and after talking to a few places and the transport truck driver himself, here is what I found:
* The truckers are all independent guys, there is no company they work for * The companies are just a couple people in an office or even working from home * They get your name into a system saying where you are, what you are transporting, where it is going to, and how much money is being offered * When these companies say they'll do it for $XXX they are just putting your name in this system for that amount. * The truckers decide to take it or leave it. * Regardless of what company you use, you'll pay the going rate or you'll be left waiting until you do A good company will do the middleman job and get your stuff hauled pretty quickly, but you will need to see what that rate will be to get the job done. It's all an opinion. Don't figure that a company will save you money, because they (normally) don't actually do any actual transport work. |

unless you plan on paying a lot, as others have said the vast majority of the companies you contact to ship your vehicle will be middlemen, putting you in touch with a driver and taking a cut for themselves. If you can find a driver directly, you can save a few bucks.
The more flexible you are on pick-up and drop-off, the lower the price will be. Less flexible and you will have to pay more for the driver to make you a priority rather than fitting you in to his route. |

All great comments. Thanks for the info. I've called BMW to see who they recommend and have been in touch with a few. It's not cheap...around $1500-$1800. And on top of that I might have to abide by a weight limit in the cargo area. As well as being able to see out all the windows. I have a lot of stuff that I was going to put in the back which would be over 100 lbs as well as partially seeing out the side/back windows. I can drive it ok with all the stuff in the back but they may balk at that. I could ship some of my stuff Fed Ex which would help but I'm still hoping to dive it back east in early April.

There are, supposedly, people willing to drive a car themselves because they already want to go from point A to B. I know very little about it so buyer beware. Might be something to look into?
I suppose you have considered just doing it yourself? Maybe make a fun little road trip out of it? |

The first linked article is a decade old but still may be of interest. The second is from 2017.

Also look at enclosed "classic car" shipping options. Here's one, from one of the companies listed in the previous post:

As far as driving myself hat was the original plan since I drove it out here around Xmas. I've driven it here from Boston almost every year from 2003 but unfortunately this year I may not be able to drive it back myself. I may still be able to do it but won't know until next week. Not sure if I would call it a fun road trip but have driven across the country many times. Much better roads in the west than in the east. But it gets longer each time. |
